the cheapest train between Vienna & Salzburg

by globetrott

There is a PRIVATE train-company in Austria now as well and all they do is travelling 12 times a day between Vienna and Salzburg. What I found perfect with them:For just 25 euros you can travel from Salzburg to Vienna with them, 50 euros is the returnticket and they will go 12 times a day in each direction.Compare that 50 euros with the daytrips by bus from Vienna that are more than 100 euros !The ordinary tickets in this distance with ÖBB (the normal train-company of Austria) is 50 euros one way, (or 25 euros when you have a "Vorteilscard" that will cost you an extra of 100 euros per year)You dont need to buy your ticket in advance, you just take a place in the train, and the conductor is coming to sell you a ticket.travel-time is about the same as with ÖBB: 3 hours to Salzburg, although ÖBB has a few trains that are 15min faster !trains also stop in: Wien-Hütteldorf - St.Pölten -...

train from Flughafen Schwechat to Vienna

by Penelope4

The cheapest way from Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Schwechat train station) to the city centre is by train. One way costs Euro 4 only and you can buy it from the ticketing machine in front of the escalator to the trains. The train usually runs every twice in an hour.

VIGNETTE

by balhannah

As soon as we crossed the Slovenian/Austrain border, we looked for a Service Station from where we could buy a Vignette. This is a quote from the website....."Vignettes are compulsory for all motor vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to and including 3.5t (cars, motor-homes, motorcycles). Vehicles with a maximum gross weight of more than 3.5t need a GO Box (lorries, busses and heavy motor-homes) which is available at so-called GO Stations. The obligation to pay tolls in Austria begins immediately at the state border."We bought the 10day one, put it on straight away, and had no problems during our time in Austria.

GRAZ: Schlossbergbahn

by globetrott

Of course you can also step up the hill in order to get to the famous Grazer Uhrturm or to the old castle, but you can as well take a funicular, it is also included in the ticket for public transport in Graz !The so-called Schlossbergbahn takes you up to the "Casmatten" - the old part of the fortification - there is a great park and an open-air theatre and plenty of places where you may relax or have a break in various restaurants. The cable-car taking you up to the hight of 427 meters above sea-level is quite steep - 61%The Schlossbergbahn is part of the GVB-Verbund-systemdaytickets and ordinary bus/tramtickets are valid as well !The cablecar is working daily Oct-may : 10.00a.m.-10.00p.m.june-september 09.00a.m.-11.00p.m.

Eisenerz: Hauly - the biggest tourbus in Austria

by globetrott

This is a great fun for all of the family, but unfortunately it is also a bit off the beaten path : Eisenerz, a small village close to Mariazell and you will find there a mountain totally made of iron and for the guided tours through the erzberg they use this very special tourbus:Hauly - the biggest tourbus in Austria When you click on my picture you will see the giant dimensions of that HAULPACK 85C built by WABCO / USAThis truck has 55 tons and may carry another 77 tons, the engine has 860 hp / PS. The ride on that truck is part of the tour through the mines inside the mountain, where you will go with a small train and then 45 minutes by Hauly on the terraces, including a stop in order to take pics on the very top of the Erzberg. The total tour costs 22 Euros and was really interesting - see my Eisenerz-page !!

Mariazellerbahn - a narrow-gauge-railway (760mm)

by globetrott

This is another great excursion from Vienna for all fans of old trains and for a great mountain-scenery in the south-west of Vienna, to Mariazell with the most important pilgrim-church in Austria:MzB is the official abbreviation for "Mariazeller Bahn" and it is a narrow-gauge-railway (760 mm) connecting Mariazell with St.Pölten, where you have to change to the trains with the ordinary track taking you to Vienna or Salzburg. Mariazellerbahn dates back to the year 1898 and it was finished in 1906. At first they had just steam-trains and since 1910 they also had electric trains, like the one on my picture. Also the track and the landscape you will pass through is terrific, as you go over scenic viaducts and high mountains & several tunnels !www.oebb.at - check here for the timetable-www.mariazellerbahn - check here for more details about the train in german-www.mariazellerbahn.at - english...

Take a flight over the alps

by globetrott

Flights over the Grossglockner and the other alpscan be done best from Zell am See !I took a flight in a small airplane over the austrian alps including the Grossglockner and even over the famous lake Koenigssee in Bavaria, that was a really great adventure. I also was lucky that I was able to join 2 young couples who had booked that flight in advance and had a seat free, and as they wanted to sit togeather I was even able to get the seat in front, next to the pilot.I payed something like 100 euros for my single seat for a long flight of about 90 minutesGo to the airport and ask for a flight ! Or even better : click on the link below and make a reservation !

Public transport to Grossglockner

by globetrott

By Public transport to Grossglockner :Take Postbus 610 from Zell am See Exploring Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse without your own car makes sense and it is a lot cheaper as well, as you totally save the fee for the toll-road. There is 1-2 buses daily and all of them will have a stop of 30 minutes at Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hoehe, so you dont see that area only by bus, but will have the chance to walk around a bit, watch the marmots, get some food etc.Bus 651 will take you within 2 hours and 15 minutes to F.J.Hoehe, in case that you like to take a wheel-chair or a bike with you you have to reserve for them at least 1 day in advance : Tel.+43 6542 5444-10*Rollstuhl-/Fahrradmitnahme 1 Werktag vorher anm., Tel.+43 6542 5444-10 (Gültig vom Mai bis Oktober); Fahrradmitnahme begrenzt möglich

Grossglockner - Hochalpenstrasse

by globetrott

Grossglockner - Hochalpenstrasse is an alpine toll-road taking you to the highest mountains of Austria with a hight of 3.798 m above the Sea-level. In the year 1800 the first successful expedition reached its peak and still today you may get there only when you are an experienced climber.Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is a toll-road and at first sight it looks quite expensive, BUT with that fee you dont only get the toll for the road, but in fact also all of the parking-fees and entry-fees to all museums along the road to Heiligenblut. Some of the hotels in that area will refund that toll, when you stay for a few daysThe dayticket for cars is 28 euros / for motorbikes 18 euros the 15-day ticket for cars: 35 / 25 euros for motorbikesthe 30day ticket for cars: 45 / 35 euros for motorbikesthe round-ticket for cars: 32 / 24 euros for motorbikes----------------------------------------something...

Arlberg Strassentunnel

by globetrott

Arlberg Strassentunnel is one of the longest tunnels through the alps with a total length of 13.972 meters and it is a very good alternative for cars to pass by the Arlberg and avoid all of the problems of driving over the snowy pass-road. In summertime it does not make sense in my opinion, it is even quite dangerous, when you considder that you will get dizzy after a while of driving at the same speed, one car in front of you and another car in your back and you have to keep that speed for several km otherwise the truck in your back will get as close as just a few cm to your backside and will start to hoop etc. when you are not willing to speed just like everybody else.Next problem is the oncoming trafic, that is not in a seperate tube and every time a large truck is oncoming, you will be hit with a strong wind, that might be disturbing very much, when you are not used to it.Arlberg...
