Of course it's very convenient to travel to Austria by plane, especially by Austrian Airlines - "A smile in the sky"!Our group was privileged to fly from Kharkiv to Vienna directly! We, a group of fifteen orphans from an orphanage in Luhansk region, their head teacher and me as an interpreter, were blessed with good sponsors: Global-2000 organization.

U-bahn, buses & trams

by Wife_of_chaser

We paid 27 euro for 2, 8 days tickets, very reasonable as once punched they are good for the whole day. There were 3 of us in the city for 5 days and we still had 3 spaces left untouched that we gave away at the end of our trip. The tickets are good for the U-bahn, the buses, and the streetcars....all of which can get you anywhere in the city in little time. Very clean and only crowded during the 5 o'clock hour with everyone going home for the day. I would recommend getting a ticket or pass no matter what as you really need them to get around Vienna and there are checkpoints where you will be fined if you don't have it punched. Also, bend the bottom of the ticket and make sure it punches in the numberd squares. We didn't know this and got lucky that we didn't get our ticket checked the 1st day.

Mitfahrzentrale / Drive with others

by Tobias_Plieninger

In Austria it is possible to drive with other drivers. If you have detailed plan you can search on this site for drivers. Most people are students. It's a good way for contacting other people. If you want to use this keep this in mind.1. Negotiate a price (about 5,- € per 100km is o.K)2. Talk about a meeting point which it easy to find.3. Appoint the time of meeting and be on time.4. Write down the mobile phone number of the driver.Don't hesitate to contact the drivers all speak English well.If you want to take others with this coule be also possible.Compared with the railway this works out cheaper.

Through Austria by train

by Tobias_Plieninger

Austria has a well equipped train system. Many trains connect Austria with their neighbours. For Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungarry and Slovenia it is recommandable to buy a ticket only for Austria. Than go out at the border station and buy a ticket for the other country. So you avoid to pay the international price. This is much cheaper. In Austria there many special prices. You should check out which prices suits for you.Perhabs it is recommandable to buy a "Vorteilscard" to get cheaper rates.Sometimes the night trains are much cheaper. On the linked page you can search for connections

how to purchase a train ticket

by rkearns

the reason i'm posting this tip is because i have seen multiple inquiries regarding train travel and whether or not one needs to purchase tickets in advance. in all the times i have been to europe, i have never once needed to purchase advance tickets. most websites will have you paying almost double for tickets purchased online. all you need to do is have a flexible agenda, arrive at the train station and purchase the ticket. you may have an hour wait. in italy, spain, germany, france, portugal and england, ihave never been denied a ticket because of overbooking. the transportation system is efficient and frequent.remember to validate your ticket upon entering the train.

for cheaper train-rides : Vorteilscard <26

by globetrott

When you don't have a Eurail,Interrail-ticket etc. yet and intend to go by train from Vienna to Salzburg, Graz, Hallstatt etc - and when you are still under 26 years of age it makes sense to buy a "VORTEILScard <26" !It is a ticket that you may get at any train-station. You pay 19,90 Euros, bring a passport-pic and will first get an interim-paper ticket, later by mail you get something looking like a credit card. Already the paper ticket entitles you to buy and use tickets for half-fare right away!! On the distance Vienna-Salzburg you may save around 19,90 Euros one-way already !! because the ordinary ticket is 39,80. This ticket makes sense for any tourist under 25 years planning to travel by train in Austria!! In case that you have no permanent address in Austria, where they could send the final ticket, give them your hotel address, a friends-address etc. - it will take several...

Vienna to Salzburg as a day-excursion ?

by globetrott

Many tourists ask themselves : Is it worth to go from Vienna to Salzburg as a day-excursion ? I would say that depends very much on your style of travelling : Day-excursions to Salzburg are possible from Vienna, BUT the train takes about 3 hours one way. In Salzburg most of the sights are in the centre and 6-8 hours should be enough there, unless you care for the real "Sound-of-music-tour" including places outside of Salzburg, like Mondsee with the wedding-chappel of the movie ."Vienna Sightseeing" offers such a fullday-tour by buses each Tuesday and saturday ( and also at thursday&sunday in summer) for 99 Euros a person and you will see some places INside of Salzburg, where that famous Sound of music-movie was made, you will see the Festspielhaus, Peterskirche & cemetery, the birthplace of Mozart, the residence of the bishop and Wolfgangsee & Fuschlsee when driving back. These tours...

Take the S-Bahn from the airport to Vienna

by globetrott

Take the S-Bahn from the airport Wien-Schwechat to Vienna, it might not be the fastest way, but it certainly is the cheapest way to do so !All you need is to pay is 2 single one-way tickets, one of them for the "central zone 100" , and the 2nd one for the 2 stations that are OUTside of zone 100, when going to the airport. Many tourists have a dayticket for "Zone100" anyway (Thats the ordinary zone for 24h-tickets, 72h-tickets, weeklytickets and Viennacard) and all that they need in addition is a 2nd single-oneway-ticket in each direction they are going.Very important : cancell both tickets BEFORE you enter the trains !!!!Just to make this clear again: you need to pay 3,60 one way to the airport, if you have a dayticket etc. you just need 1 additional onewayticket and you cancell it before you enter the train. If you dont have a dayticket etc. you buy 2 tickets for "one way" and you put...

Airportbus-Vienna

by globetrott

Take the Flughafenbus in order to get from the airport Wien Schwechat to the stations Westbahnhof and Wien Meidling or to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz, because it is the most convenient transport when you need to reach the stations or the centre of the city. The bus needs just 20 minutes to reach the city and between 05.00a.m. and 11.00p.m. it runs every 30 minutes !The buses are leaving Schwedenplatz at the full hour and 30 minutes later !At the Airport they start always 20 and 50 minutes after the full hour !From there it is a walk of 200 meters to the metro U1 and U4, the trams #1, #2, #21, #N, and most of the night-buses across Vienna will also start at Schwedenplatz. The price for that bus is one way 6 eurostickets are sold by the driverFrom Schwedenplatz/Morzinplatz buses start at every full and half hour------------------------------------------There is a similar bus from the Airport...

Citybike: free of charge for 1 hour

by globetrott

Vienna Citybike is a great and also cheap way to explore Vienna !All you have to do is to REGISTER with an Austrian Bancomat-card (ATM-card), the registry is just 2 Euros. Then you can get your bicycle at one of the many bike-stations ( most of them are close to tourist-attractions in the centre ) and give it back at ANY station, so you need NOT go back, where you started, but of course it could happen, that all fixing-places are occupied at the station, where you had planned to give it back, for such a case it is always best to leave some sparetime at the end of this 60 min !You are fully responsible for your bicycle :When your bike is stolen - you have to pay 600 Euros !In case that you rent the bike for more than 1 hour :2 hours = 2 Euros3 hours is 4 Euros4 hours is 8 Eurosevery extra hour is 4 Euro afterwards. The link below is just in German, BUT the way I understand it, it will not...
