motorhomes >3500kg need a GO-box !!

by globetrott

This is an important message for all owners of vehicles & motorhomes with more than 3,5 tons :The Autobahn-Vignette is NOT enough for you, you need the same kind of GO-Box, as the large trucks and buses need them !!The system is simple, BUT also quite expensive : You buy a box, put it inside the car and at several places you will be registered automatically and will have to pay a fixed amount per each Km you drive on the Autobahn / highway.See more details on my link below !!You may find machines like the one on my picture at many borders of Austria.---------------------------------------------Please be aware that a lot of motorhomes that you rent in germany are more than 3500 kg, because the limit for a german car-drivinglicence is 7500kg, while in Austria it is 3500 kg.

Highway-toll in Austria : You need a Vignette !

by globetrott

When driving with your car on the austrian highways you need to have a Vignette / a sticker fixed behind your windscreen. That even applies for the city-highways going across Vienna. These stickers will be controlled by a company called "ASFINAG" and their care look a bit like policecars, they mostly make their controls at parkingspaces along the highway and around highway-restaurants and hotels.Get your Vignette at one of the many petrolstations along the highway, where-ever you enter Austria. Some places in Germany and Switzerland and other surrounding countries will sell them as well close to the austrian border. For cars and motorhomes with less than 3500kg you pay :10-days-vignette : 7,90 euros2 months-vignette : 22,90 eurosfor the whole year : 76,20 eurosand it is valid also during Dec. before and Jan, after the full year ! Motorbikes pay 30,40 for the full yearfor 2 months : 11,50...

CAT - the fast train from the airport to the city

by globetrott

CAT is the name of the fastest train from the airport to the city centre of Vienna. Fly the train is the motto of that newly built train that will take you to the station "Wien Mitte" / Landstrasse Hauptstrasse within just 16 minutes. This is certainly the best way to get to the city centre IN CASE that your hotel is in walking-distance from there (it is PERFECT for the city Hilton-hotel!!)When you stay closer to Schwedenplatz, Suedbahnhof or Westbahnhof I rather recommend the airport-bus, see my next tip !There are various prices for one-way-tickets as follows :Buy the ticket inside the train : 10,- (5,-) EurosBuy them at a machine for 9,- (5,-) Eurosreturn-ticket : 16,- (8,-) EurosPrint them out at your computer : 8,- (5,-) Eurosreturnticket : 15,- (8,-) EurosFamily-tickets are 25,- Euroschildren under 5 are free and each child between 6 and 14 goes for free with 1 paying...

Vienna-Card or not ?

by globetrott

Vienna-Card is mostly recommended by tour-operators or travel-agencies. In my personal opinion this is quite a nonsense in most cases :Vienna-card for 72 hours is 18,50 Euros and it entitles you for 72 hours of free transport, including all trams, buses, metros and Schnellbahn inside of Vienna. That same transportation-ticket alone is 14,- euros, so you actually pay 4,50 Euros for the reductions that you get for entrance-fees in various museums. At first the "good" message :The Strassenbahnmuseum / museum of trams is totally free of charge for all holders of the Vienna-cardFor the Jewish Museum, Augarten Atelier, Academy of fine Artsyou get a reduction of 40%At Schönbrunn and other places you will not get a reduction of the entrance-fee , BUT you get a "Special gift"Albertina, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Hofburg and lots of the other museums of major interest give just 10-13%...

Horse-drawn carriages in Vienna

by hopang

Horse-drawn carriages are a common sight on the streets in the heart of the city of Vienna especially at popular tourist attractions such as Heldenplatz, Burgtheater, Vienna University, Ringstrasse, City Hall Building and Hundertwasserhaus. They are very popular means of transportation for local and foreign tourists on the streets! You are certainly touring the city from a very different perspective. You may just simply relax at the comfort of the carriage and take the slow moving horse-drawn carriages to view the many colourful streets and wonderful architectural buildings of the city.

Vienna City Hop On Hop Off Bus

by hopang

Vienna City Hop On Hop Off Bus is an interesting sightseeing tour especially to those who visit the city of Vienna for the very first time. You are looking at the city of Vienna from a very different perspective and at your own pace! The bus is even wheelchair accessible. Commentaries are in German and English. There are several tours to choose from ranging from one hour tour to one whole day tour. One hour tour costs 13.00 euros per adult and 7.00 euros per child. One day tour costs just 20.00 euros per adult and 7.00 euros per child. One day tour ticket is certainly worth your money especially to those who have time to spare. You can purchase your tour ticket on the bus on the day of travel. There are 15 stops along the way and the tour begins from Vienna State Opera. Among some of the other stops along the way are Heldenplatz, Vienna University, Schwedenplatz, St. Stephen's Cathedral,...

City Airport Train (CAT)

by hopang

CAT trains are the most convenient means of transportation from Vienna International Airport (VIE) to the City Terminal in the city of Vienna. It takes just 16 minutes to travel from the airport to the city. It costs 10.00 euros for a single ticket and 18.00 euros for return ticket. However it is quite costly compared to commuter trains which are also available from the international airport to the city. Of course commuter trains take longer time to reach the city from the airport.City airport trains are comfortable with large spaces for your luggages. Entertainments are provided from the television screens. The trains are efficient and punctual. You can also check in your luggages at the City Terminal in Vienna up to 75 minutes before your flight departure and receive your boarding pass before travelling to the airport. However you must present valid CAT tickets before you check in at...

Vienna Underground (U-bahn)

by hopang

Vienna Underground (Vienna U-bahn) is a mass rapit transit system which runs mostly underground under the city of Vienna. It began business operations in 1976 although its history dates back to the previous century. It has a total of five lines, viz U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6 with approximately 85 subway stations. Total length of subway tracks is approximately 70 kilometres. A single ticket costs 1.80 euros, a 24 hour ticket costs 5.70 euros and a 72 hour ticket costs 13.60 euros. The tickets can also be used for other public transportation such as trams and buses. Since we were in Vienna for a short Christmas weekend, we bought 24 hour tickets one at a time. The subway system looks a little bit primitive especially its subway stations. Trains are efficient, frequent and quite modern, it has to be said.

Vienna International Airport (VIE)

by hopang

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located at Schwechat, approximately 20 kilometres southeast of the city of Vienna. It is the largest airport in Austria. The international airport has just two runways but capable of handling approximately 20 millions passengers per year. Approximately 75 international airlines make use of the airport and it is considered as one of the busiest airports in Europe. There are three terminals viz, terminals 1 and 2 which are the main terminals and terminal 1A is utilised for lowcost carriers. A fourth terminal is being built known as SKYLINK owning to heavier passenger traffic. The main terminals have four levels, i.e. basement level or level -1 for CAT trains and commuter trains, parking lots and supermarkets such as Billa, level 0 (ground level) for arrival passengers, level 1 for departure passengers with Gates A, B and C and level 2 is used for...

Walking

by hopang

Walking is an ideal way to exercise your legs, body and mind especially on your vacation in a foreign city and country! Many major tourist attractions, shopping centres, bars, restaurants and international hotels are located within and inside Ringstrasse in the first district in the heart of the city of Vienna. Thus all corners of the city centre are within walking distance. There are also many pedestrian streets free of motor vehicles in the heart of the city. The best place to begin your walking tour is the State Opera House just inside Ringstrasse.Of course you may choose to stop and relax while walking wherever and whenever you like along the way in the city streets, to chill out in the bars or restaurants, to hunt for souvenirs at the many souvenir shops along the streets, to do some window shopping at elegant shopping malls or simply to visit the various tourist attractions in the...
