By car

by Helga67

Don't forget to turn on your lights when driving around in Austria. When using the highway (cars and motorcycles), you will need a 'vignette' (tol ticket). You can buy the vignette at border crossings, gas stations, or at post offices. There are 10-days tickets (7.60 EUR), 2-months tickets (21.80 EUR) and all-year-round tickets (72.60 EUR). The vignette must be displayed on the inside of the front windshield. Make sure you pick it on the right place, otherwise you can still get a fine. There are frequent controls, fines are heavy (400 - 4000 EUR for not having a vignette)!

Travel in April in Motorhome through Austria

by Crowe

My family and I travelled by Motorhome through Austria (from germany) to reach the italian lakes.I will say I think we experienced every weather going. We got hit by snow travelling over the alps in a motorhome.I did notice that some old motorhomes that we passed struggling witht he hills never mind the snow and slush. Our rented motorhome did make it over the mountain roads no problem though I had to take it very slow. We made it late but in one piece. Some of my passengrs were a little apprehensive but my father and me thought it was great and very dramatic. I would have take n more photos if it wasnt scared of getting snowed in.This photo is from the german side just before going through the Tyrol.

When in Austria, take the train!

by tulipcat

To save cost, you might want to consider using the 3-day / 4-day / 5-day etc EURAIL pass. We used the Eurail pass to travel: Vienna - Salzburg - Innsbruck - Hallstatt - Vienna. The trains are comfortable and clean. The journey on the trains will allow you to see Austria beautiful sights - mountains, meadows, countryside, rivers, lakes, open fields... You can book the passes from a respectable tour agent. Unless you speak German, get the passes from your tour agent in you country before leaving for Austria.Within Austria's various cities, get the Vienna card, Innsbruck card , Salzburg card etc - an economical way to travel and get into the tourist attractions. All prepaid in the card cost.

Driving through Austria - lovely scenery

by Whitevanman

Driving through Austria was a very pleasant experience, with fantastic roads and scenery to match. Some expensive tolls though, the Arlberg tunnel on the E60 some 22km long, cost about the same in euros, but we must accept that it probably saved us a long ,slow, steep climb, and the 30km south from Innsbruck to the Italian border on the E45 cost 8 euros if I remember correctly. Okay so sometimes we did use the autostrada but hell it p*ssed with rain all the way through Austria in both directions. Sorry i don't like stopping for photos when its raining.

Ellmau - Hartkaiserbahn

by nhcram

Take a trip up the Wilder Kaiser on the funicular railway. At the top there is now a panoramic restaurant which they were buiding when I was here in June 2005.The view from the top are fantastic and there are lots of marked paths for hikers.

Getting to Austria by air

by Tobias_Plieninger

Austria has its own air company austrian airlines. They have connections around the world. If you come from Europe perhabs the cheap flyers work out cheaper for you.Salzburg und Klagenfurt are connected by RYAN-AIR. www.ryanair.comBratislava in Slovakia is connected with Skyeurope www.skyeurope.com.From this airport there are bus connections to Vienna.

Austria by car

by Tobias_Plieninger

Driving through Austria by car is very convenient. The prices for gasoline a very low compared with the neighbouring countries. If drive on the motorways you should keep in mind that all people in the car need tohave a orange jacket "warnweste". If the police will find you without this you will be fined. On the motorways you sould have a "pickerl" this is for the toll.It can be bought at all gas stations near the motorway.Being caught without a pickerl will cost 160,- €The controls are frequent so don't risk it!

Driving home through mountain passes

by nighthawk

A hobby of mine is spotting road signs, well, you gotta have something to do when you are just sitting next to the chauffeur ;).Drives hubby crazy haha for sometimes I yell at him: slow down!!! and if he doesn t succeed I can sulk lol.But anyway, we drove back through the mountains this time. I think I was the only one really enjoying it, kids well they are kids and hubby had to get the car with camper up and down the narrow mountain roads (haha you should have heard him ... poeh, can imagine! he wasn't too happy with road conditions).

Group tickets and 1 plus ticket

by morgenhund

If you are travelling in a group of 6 or more, then a group ticket is the way forward. For journeys of upto 100km you save 30%, over and above that you can save 40% - although you must book in advance and reservations are recommended. For smaller groups, the 1Plus Freizeitkarte offers discounts for groups of between 2 and 6 people (maximum saving 40%).

Half priced rail travel in Austria for U26s

by morgenhund

If you are under 26 and planning to spend more than EUR40 on train tickets, you might want to get a Vorteilscard - it saves you 45% on train fares bought from a ticket office or 50% from a ticket machine. To qualify, all you'll need is a mailing address in Austria and a passport photo. You get a provisional card valid from the day you pay the money, and the actual card arrives about 4-6 weeks later, and is valid for a year. that way you can travel around Austria for half price. For over 26s a Vorteilscard costs EUR 99.90. Bearing in mind that Vienna to St Anton cost me EUR 43 as a single in 1st class with a Vorteilscard instead of around EUR 85 one way without the Vorteilscard, the money is made back very swiftly.
