There are two main train stations in Vienna - Westbanhof and Südbahnhof. Trains from Germany, Switzerland, and western Austria arrive at the Westbahnhof on Europaplatz, where Mariahilferstrasse crosses the Gürtel. If you're coming from Italy, Czech Republic or Hungary, you'll arrive at Südbahnhof.

Vienna : Wien-Schwechat Airport is 11 miles southeast of Vienna. About a 40 min Taxi ride.Salzburg : W.A. Mozart Airport is 4 kms from the city centre. About a 20 min Taxi ride.Rail : The Austrian Federal Railways have a total length of about 5,800 rail-kms. There are frequent and quick direct connections with all European countries. For EuroCity and SuperCity trains a supplement is charged in the first class.Taxis : City taxis are equipped with officially sealed metres; surcharges apply for luggage carried on the trunk, but these are clearly posted in the cab. In resort areas, zone or other set charges generally apply over frequently travelled routes.

From The Netherlands it is not that far to AUSTRIA!I prefer travelling by car because it makes things so much more easier!!You can stop when and where you want and as often as you want and that is often because I love taking photographs. When I am travelling on my own there is no one who bothers.......and my husband has learned not to be bothered......great! I call "STOP" and he stops, even if I call that dozens of times and believe me, I DO.....

You would enjoy a train ride through the Austrian Alps if you are going from Germany to Italy or vice versa. The route that passes through Innsbruck is especially beautiful. Please see my travelogue for more photos.

If you are traveling by car, an excellent freeway network awaits you.Maximum Speeds: Outside city limits, a maximum speed of 100 km/h applies. Within city limits, the speed is 50 km/h.City limits are clearly marked by signs. On freeways, a speed of 130 km/h is prescribed.Important rules: According to the law, seat belts must be worn by all passengers in the car! Motorcyclists must drive with a helmet. The following types of fuel are available: Regular (91 octane) Super Unleaded (95 octane)Super Plus Unleaded (98 octane) Unleaded DieselPrice for gasoline is really cheap. In Vienna I paid 83 Cent für Super unleaded in June 2002NOTE: In Austria you need a 'Vignette' for driving on Autobahns legally.Costs: € 7,60 for ten days

The best and easy way to get around in the mountains is to utilise the amazing transport system of funicular, cable-cars or even chairlifts (if you dare) like this one to the top of the Hohe Salve. Early morning when the clouds may still be in the valley below the views of the peaks are tremendous at the top.

Getting to Salzburg, and just about anywhere else is as easy as hopping a train or bus. If you've got the dough you can fly into the airport on the outskirts of town. The bus system is great and will get you all around town, and your feet will take you the rest of the way, allowing you to soak in the scenery at an acceptable pace.

How to get there:On the Westautobahn motorway until exit Regau: further on to Ebensee. From the mountain station of the Feuerkogel funicular, follow the red marking to Alberfeldkogel. Then follow the red marking to the right to Riederhuette and the Grosse Hoellkogel. On the route upwards back to a valley, stop there and continue on the route to the branching off to Alberfeldkogel. Keep to the right and return via the Edltal to the mountain station funicular.

Trains are very efficient in Austria!! They are a great way to get between cities and towns!! I used a Eurail pass so I'm not sure of the cost of individual travel. This is a picture that I took just before arriving in Salzburg.
