if you enter austria by car ,you need to buy a 'vignet' and place it on your carwindow ,it is only for the highway's ,you can buy them for a week, month or year.When traveing in europe you can take the train, nice vieuws !When you are in a city you can use the trams and busses ,but in the small villages you need a car if you you whant to go siteseeing.But if you go to a skiressort you can come by train,most of the time there is a station in the neaburhood
I am sure you can get there by plain or car, we drove all the way from Prague. Its very very easy and comfortable. It took about 3hours but we really enjoyed the trip.Very good road trough Brno and better than going trough Linz. By car
As I have only been there once, I really can't recommend a best way, but I will outline how I went. I flew SAS from Chicago to Stockholm and then Austrian Airline from Stockholm to Vienna. And then Austrain from Vienna to Stockholm and SAS from Stockholm to Chicago. I thought that both airlines were very hospitable and the food was really really good.Don't bother with a car, the public transportation is great.
I will recommend by car if you live close. If not airplane and bus is a good chose.In St.Anton it's the cable cars and lift who gets you around in the mountain. And it's up too you where you want your ski too stop?
You can fly to most major Austrian cities, or use the excellent rail network. Car's OK too, of course.Same as above. If you attempt hitching though, I must warn you that Austria is incredibly difficult in this respect. It happened to me TWICE that I stood on a 'Raststation' all night long, once even in a horribly cold drizzle, without getting a lift. I never experienced this in any other country. Perhaps things are better on smaller roads, but Autobahns are terrible.

Vienna is Austria's main air transport hub, but there are international airports at Linz, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt. If you're visiting Austria from outside Europe, it may be cheaper to fly to a European 'gateway' city and travel overland from there. Munich, for example, is only two hours by train from Salzburg. Technically there's no departure tax when flying out of Austria, instead you cop a 'passenger service charge' of around US$15.Austria has excellent rail connections to all major European destinations. Buses are generally slower, cheaper and less comfortable than trains. Getting to Austria by road is simple, and there are fast, well-maintained Autobahnen (motorways) to all surrounding countries. I have been to Austria four times and I still think it is fabulous!Rent a car and DRIVE,DRIVE and stay where you want when you want. The only way to travel.You have to get off the beaten path.
