Speeding - Payment of Fines

by morgenhund

I am still not convinced about the legitimacy of the system in rural Austria. Whilst travelling in a car in Lower Austria, we were pulled over - I was a passenger in my friend's car, and had to interpret for him, and was told he was doing 76km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The policeman wanted cash or a credit card to settle the fine immediately, although I requested payment via bank transfer - this was apparently not an option. I said that we would gladly settle in cash - the original €35 fine soon became €20 as soon as I requested a receipt - and he quipped that he was doing this so we didn't think he was going to pocket the cash himself. Somewhat strangely, he did not request to see any documentation about the car (insurance papers should be carried at all times!), and all he noted was the car registration number, and nothing about personal ID. I would always advise people to request a...

Driving a car in Austria: Crosswalks

by lisi18

When there is a crosswalk without traffic lights and somebody waits to cross the street you have to stop your car (if a safe stopping is possible)! There is a law in Austria for that. If you don't do it, you might get a ticket especially in the morning when the childrens go to school.I think this is a good law! But travelers might not know it because in a lot of other countries this law does not exist.

Rent your sports equipment instead of buying it

by lisi18

Rent your skis and snowboards! You always get the newest, best prepared skis! If you want to have something by your own: Get yourself some boots, which fit properly! If you use your skies only a view weeks in the year, its better and mostly cheaper to rent them. If you buy skies, you should take them every year to a shop for preperation and to control the binding.

Directions

by dr.firas

In Vienna you could be confused by looking to the direction, take an example by enlarging the photo and see how the Bus station is marked in both straight and to left, and actually it is only to the left, so if you are not sure, ask any person and he will help you, so you can save your time on searching!

Danube floods.

by Martin_S.

While we were visiting one of the small towns that are scattered along the banks of the Danube River we encountered the "ruler" that you can see in the picture. It was connected to the side of a three story building, running from the ground all the way to the top. At about the level of the second floor you could see a date written 14-8-2002. The date mark on the ruler showed the level to which the Danube flooded on that date. There were higher dates, but we can all remember that one. We sat on the upper balcony only a few centimeters above what the high level water mark was. It is truly amazing how much damage was done and even more amazing how hard it is to see any remains of damage, all has been rebuilt.

Hiking in the mountains

by Carnation

Scenic HikeYou need good weather if you want to hike on the Hoellengebirge plateau as bad sight or fog can cause orientation problems. I recommend you start early as temperatures rise a lot in the valleys. The hike is not difficult, however, owing to the relatively low difference in altitude.

by Rhondaj

In the spring of 1998, stayed at the Hotel Maximillian. Decent place, BUT!, I'm an early riser and when I tried to leave the hotel for an early walk (5:30 am) I was locked in. Not my room, the lobby. What if the place caught on fire? The desk clerk arrived at 6 am. By that time there were 3 of us wanting to get out. She unlocked the door for us, saying that they lock it for our safety.
