Make sure your brakes work on...

by Jaco_Emmen

Make sure your brakes work on your car!!! It happened me I was on a mountain slide... with my car and suddenly the traffic stopped, on a 8 to 10 % track!!! When you have a caravan or hanger behind the car and no good handbrake..Put some wooden blocks under your seat, you can put them behind your wheels if this happens to you and it will prevent your car to role backwards!Happy travelingJaco

by Fab31Frank

Be wary of ticks, since they carry Lyme's Disease, an infection that can be very dangerous. Wear long trousers and socks if walking in woods, tall grass, weeds and brush; and know how to remove them without leaving their mandibles in your skin.

Beware of the weather !

by MVP

When travelling about in the mountains, especially when you're hiking, please keep in mind that weather conditions can change dramatically even within half an hour. Make sure you always carry some rain protection and something warm to put on, even if it's high summer.

Another tip for the drivers:...

Another tip for the drivers: to use Austrian motorways you'll need a vignette (sticker) which costs about 100 ATS for ten days. You can purchase it everywhere - petrol stations, post offices, kiosks... However, this is not all you'll pay to drive all over the country: some roads are private and charge an extra toll. Argh.;-)

Getting around Austria can be...

by oja

Getting around Austria can be a bit tricky sometimes. There are a few wide and fast Autobahns, but most of the country is accessible through regional roads marked red or yellow on the map. It seems, however, that yellow ones are supposed to be more difficult to drive than red ones. On my way back I chose such a road when going from St Johann in Tirol to Bischofshofen because it was the shortest. Well, it might have been the shortest in theory, but definitely not in practice! Slopes of 15% and unasphalted surface, not to mention wicked curves, gave a hard time to this driver-beginner. I managed, but would never do it again! So choose 'red' roads although they look a bit longer. You'll still reach your destination faster and with less stress.

Austria is a country for car travellers. The austrian police however fines you for every violation you make in traffic. Even when those violations are part of your not knowing the site. The fines are not so high, but must be paid immediatly

by Innovateur

Especially black people should be aware of the fact that they might be considered as drug dealers or searched in public as police often makes little difference. If this happens, resufse any comment/statment and make a call to your ambassy to have things settled out. Having a Passport with a valid visa and maybe the plane/train tickets with you could help.I am embarrassed for both, some black people in Austria who are really drug dealers but even more for the media, the public and the police who often do not differenciate correctly. In Spring 1999 a Nigerian died in the presence of 3 Policemen after his legs and hand where tied together and his mouth and at last part of his nose was covered with duct tape.See http://welcome.to/theglobetrotter --> Venna or www.amnesty.at for more info!
