Here is the pic of 'Boris and Gleb Church' or simply 'Kaloza Church' which was built on top of the 12th century`s church in the 15th century. Hope that does not sound confusing. ;) This one of seven Belarussian wonders is sitting on top of Zamkovaya mountain. The side you see on the pic basically is what`s left of the original church cause in 1853 its south and west sides collapsed into Neman river as a result of a landslip. The story of the church is such: Long time ago two noble men Boris and Gleb took in captivity citizens of Russian town Kaloza. The prisoners were brought to Hrodna where they were allowed to build a church for themselves. The church was named after Boris and Gleb of course, but people just called her Kaloza, after the name of their long lost home. Address: Zamkovaya mountainDirections: Right bank of river Neman. The best way is to walk along the embankment of Neman until you see the church on the hill and climb there.

Very beautiful Russian Orthodox cathedral. We attended a mass and the music was so beautiful (the melody) that we stand more than half an hour, just listening to the choir. The atmosphere is very beautiful, you can buy nice icons in the church. Leave a Comment Address: vul. Azhyeshka 23Directions: near the station (in the direction of the center)

Here is a nice recreational area in the very downtown. Sort of Hrodna Central Park. ;) It was dirty and disgusting just a few years ago. But now things changed and it turned into a peaceful place where you can sit on the bench and drink your beer or simply walk around and enjoy yourself.. ;) In the evening it is all lit up and crowded with young people. If you go further, you`ll see an amusement park with a few rides ($1 per ride). Those rides are old and primitive, but our children seem to enjoy it anyway. I guess it is better to have at least something, than nothing at all. If you want to try it, I recommend ''flying'' on the one that looks like a bunch of mushrooms (left from the kids rail ride). It`s the scariest. :) NOTE: If you are visiting someone who has kids, bringing them to the park on a nice day would be a good idea. Number #1 children`s favorite is the Kids Rail Ride (see my pic #4). Address: Ozeshko StreetDirections: 5 minutes walk from Pokrovskaya Church towards downtown.

The oldest Zoo in Belarus was built in 1927 by school teacher and animal lover - Yan Kohanovskij. It started with just a few animals and grew to 321 types of animals. Our Zoo is an interesting place to visit cause the cages are extremly close to people. Imagine being able to see lion just 2 meters away, hear and smell its breath... And how about petting a huge bison or camel or cute family of deers who are sticking their tongues and lick your hand... It`s unforgettable!!! Alas, all this opportunity to pet comes from the small space the Zoo was given. :( And animals live in horrible conditions. I recommend to bring some food with you, cause the animals always seem to be hungry. But please, NO bread (at least not for the mammals) - it`s bad for them. Bring some veggies (like carrots or cabbiage) for deers and horses. Bread can be fed to large crowd of birds. Address: Timiryazeva Str., 11. Hours: 9.00 am - 6.00 pm.Phone: +375-152-47-28-86 (Director)Directions: Next to the rail-way station. At the Soviet square take buses #3, 11, 14, 15, 16 and get off at the stop 'Rail-Way Station' OR walk east from downtown (20 minutes).Website: http://www.grodno.by/?style=grodno/zoo/ - in Russian

Very weird building to see, the Drama theater is even for western standards quite expensive. I really wonder how many citizens of Grodno can afford to go here. At least the area around the theatre is used by the local youth as a 'hang-out' spot, there are beer bottles lying everywhere. Leave a Comment Address: vul. BatorijaDirections: to the west of the center near the river

The Basilian Convent or The Convent of the Nativity of the Virgin was built with bricks between 1720-1751 in Baroque style. Address: Gorodenskogo StreetDirections: Well, it is in downtown again. Walk west for 5 minutes with Bernardin Cathedral behind you and Drama theatre on your left.

Catholic church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross or simply Bernardin Cathedral was built in 1612-1618 on a small hill in front of the Drama theatre. It has quite nice interior and, even though it is prohibited to snap a pic inside, I managed to do so.

Farny or The Jesuit Cathedral was built in the 15th century by a king Stefan Batorij. The Cathedral is famous for 2 reasons: 1) It has the oldest in Eastern Europe pendulum clock, built in the 17th century. The clock works due to the gravity of a 60 kg stone - the stone goes down 15 meters within each 36 hours; 2) Peter The Great of Russia came to open it himself. It`s really cool inside will all that statues. You should see. Address: Stefan Batorij StreetDirections: Soviet square.

Pokrovskaya Church (or Cafedral Orthodox Cathedral) was built in 1904-05 in pseudo-russian style. It was built in memory of Russian artillerymen (they were from the 26th artillery brigade to be exact) who died fighting in Russian-Japanese war of 1904-05. Address: Ozeshko Str, 23.Directions: 5 minutes walking from the rail way station or 10 minutes walking from the downtown (opposite direction).

The construction of the Cathedral was started in XVc. by the king of Poland - Stefan Batory. He wanted to be buried in it but since he died 20 years before the end of construction he was buried in Krakow's Wawel There is a unique collection of wooden statues taking several rows in the altar. Address: The central square in the town
