Different shops could be found at central part of Minsk.
What to buy: There are some things that could be recommendation to buy in Minsk. At first, it is alcohol - Belarusian beer and famous Belarusian cognac - Kristal cognac. There are lots of vodka species as well. There is big variety of sweet things as well - chocolates with nostalgic views from Russian style tales on their papers, sweets (with honey inside are very nice, these sweets are in shape of barrel).
Talking about postcards of Minsk, I found it a bit complicated to find, especially standard size. Anyway, they are cheaper than in Western Europe or Lithuania.

I don't know the name of this shop (it is in Independence square), but it is quite Western European looking with lot of things to buy inside. I don't know about the prices (maybe they are bigger here as well), but seems that lot of locals enjoy spending time here.
The accent of this shop is round shape place with itself playing piano in the middle (you could see it in photo). I bought alcohol and sweets at this shop.

This is not a tip on what to buy, but how to buy! In many large shops, especially food shops with many attendants, you may have to choose twice - Soviet style. You decide what you want and tell (or point) to the shop assistant who will either prepare the item or just stand there telling you in Russian that you must now pay for it. You must then go and find the distant cashier and tell them what you want. If you speak Russian. After payment they give you a ticket you take back to the shop assistant and you get your purchase. This has not changed since the days of the Soviet Union.
If you do not speak fluent Russian, always take a pen and paper with you. You can always draw pictures and write numbers!

Well, you can buy it for sure at GUM store (first floor, on your left) next to Oktyabr`skaya metro station and I think at any big stores around town.
What to buy: This BIRCH VODKA 'Berezovaya' (spirit 40% Vol) is an excellent product!
Not only it took 3rd place in the International Tasting Competition 'Drinks Industry' in Moscow in 2005. It is also in the group of 10 best vodkas of the word.
It`s smooth, light, doesn`t give a headache afterwards. The bottle looks cool, so you can buy it as a present too.
What to pay: As far as I remeber it was $4 for 0.5 liter bottle.
