Trade Center "Stolitsa" (Belorussian: Торговый центр "Столица") is biggest shopping area in Minsk (and Belarus) and it is located under beautiful Independent square. All glass domes with three sculptures of storks in flight that decorate the square are windows for a large shopping center.
I never saw before something similar. I didn't bought anything special, just walking around. Near enter from hotel Minsk (there were three underground enters to the trade center) was Ice cream stand.
The whole trade center have 75000 m2 and you can find various shops and boutiques, bars and restaurants, internet cafe and other facilities for entertainment and rest.
Main square on last level is open stage where is often organized various presentations, championships, plays, concerts etc.
Working time was from 10 am till 10 pm every day.

Among big soviet buildings and monument my friends and I find a little outdoor market. It seem to serve mostly for tourists because you can find many interesting gifts predominantly souvenirs (folk art, Soviet-era items etc.).
I found out that many people rate this market as one of the best place in the city for souvenirs like matroshka dolls, lacquered wooden boxes or something else of folk art or artistic items.
In this market is real painting exhibit where artists showing and trade their work. Truly art shop in Minsk.

I remember one interesting magnet. It is hand-painted crust of birch, small peaces with motives mostly old houses or nature. I remember that it was cost at that time (August 2011) 15000 BYR.

You can visit market from 09:00 - 18:30, every day except Monday when is close.

What to buy: Many folks art, soviet items and regular souvenirs

What to pay: At least 15000 BYR and up, not the cheapest place for buying the souvenirs in Minsk.

This complex has good air-conditioning system. There is public toilet as well.

It is based on self services, very crowd and is hard to find a place to seat but food is tasty and cheap with wide variety of options. Various: SHOPPING -SOVIET STYLE

by DAO Updated Jun 17, 2013

    SOVIET DECORATION ABOVE A SHOP!

This is not a tip on what to buy, but how to buy! In many large shops, especially food shops with many attendants, you may have to choose twice - Soviet style. You decide what you want and tell (or point) to the shop assistant who will either prepare the item or just stand there telling you in Russian that you must now pay for it. You must then go and find the distant cashier and tell them what you want. If you speak Russian. After payment they give you a ticket you take back to the shop assistant and you get your purchase. This has not changed since the days of the Soviet Union.

If you do not speak fluent Russian, always take a pen and paper with you. You can always draw pictures and write numbers!

    Souvenirs from Belarus

by Raimix Updated Feb 27, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Different shops could be found at central part of Minsk.

What to buy: There are some things that could be recommendation to buy in Minsk. At first, it is alcohol - Belarusian beer and famous Belarusian cognac - Kristal cognac. There are lots of vodka species as well. There is big variety of sweet things as well - chocolates with nostalgic views from Russian style tales on their papers, sweets (with honey inside are very nice, these sweets are in shape of barrel).

Talking about postcards of Minsk, I found it a bit complicated to find, especially standard size. Anyway, they are cheaper than in Western Europe or Lithuania.

    Shop in Independence square

by Raimix Updated Dec 6, 2007

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I don't know the name of this shop (it is in Independence square), but it is quite Western European looking with lot of things to buy inside. I don't know about the prices (maybe they are bigger here as well), but seems that lot of locals enjoy spending time here.

The accent of this shop is round shape place with itself playing piano in the middle (you could see it in photo). I bought alcohol and sweets at this shop.

Almost at any big liquor store: Our BEST vodka

    by sunshine9689 Written Apr 5, 2006

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Well, you can buy it for sure at GUM store (first floor, on your left) next to Oktyabr`skaya metro station and I think at any big stores around town.

What to buy: This BIRCH VODKA 'Berezovaya' (spirit 40% Vol) is an excellent product!
Not only it took 3rd place in the International Tasting Competition 'Drinks Industry' in Moscow in 2005. It is also in the group of 10 best vodkas of the word.
It`s smooth, light, doesn`t give a headache afterwards. The bottle looks cool, so you can buy it as a present too.

What to pay: As far as I remeber it was $4 for 0.5 liter bottle.
