Dinamo Stadium

No visit of a new country is complete for me without visiting at least one football stadium. Well worth seeing in Minsk is the Dinamo Stadium, which is the National Stadium of Belarus.

It is an all-seater multi purpose stadium with a capacity of about 41.000 people. Besides football matches of the national team it is sometimes also used for home matches of Dinamo Minsk. The club usually plays at the much smaller Dinamo-Yuni Stadium.

The Dinamo Stadium was built in 1934, but totally destroyed during WWII. So the current structure dates back to 1954. In 1980 it was even a venue of the football tournament of the Summer Olympics taking place in Moscow.

Around the stadium an almost daily flea market takes place. Here you find everything from sports equipment and clothes to groceries. I got myself a pin of Dynamo Minsk for 30.000 BYR here. The price was probably a rip-off for western tourists.

Directions:
Minsk's Dinamo Stadium is located just south of the Independence Avenue (Nezavisimosti prospekt),
right in the heart of the city centre.

A trip is not a trip without visiting the most important football stadium of the city! :) Yeah, I'm very fond of football and expecially about international and some times unknown Eastern teams. It's not the case of Dinamo Minsk which is a well known football team from Belarus and once famous in Soviet Union as well.
The Dinamo Stadium is part of Minsk's landscape and it's really an interesting piece of architecture. It lies along the river and very close to the main centre of the city. It has the shape of a colisseum, very classic roman style, and it's built beside the upper town hill so in a certain way it remembers the Greek threatres as well, but with an oval shape.
Inside it's the typical olympic stadium, very big, with no coverage and brand new UEFA-Cup approved orange seats. There were no matches when I was there so I didn't have the chance to attend any.
Football is not the no.1 sport in Belarus, since ice hockey is surely more popular. There are not so many football fans and the Belarusian league is not competitive with the neighbour Russia and Ukraine. So the main use of the Dinamo Stadium these days is as a sort of flea market which is held every day (if I'm not wrong) all around the stadium, except during matches of course.

The arches; the main entrance to the stadium

Dinamo Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Minsk, Belarus. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Dynamo Minsk.

The stadium holds 41,040 people. It was constructed in 1934, but was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War and rebuilt in 1954.

The stadium was one of the venues of the football tournament at the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Even if you are not a sports fan (I am not either), the stadium is worth seeing and picturing; it is world famous - and really big. It used to be the most famous in the ex-Soviet Union area.
