These are a few interesting official web pages to help you while planning your visit to Belgium:www.toerismevlaanderen.be: the site of the Flemish tourist authority, info available in F, NL, E, Dwww.toerismelimburg.be: hey, I have to promote my own province as well, right? in F, NL, E, Dwww.b-rail.be: the site of the Belgian railway company, plan and book ahead (if you are a resident of Belgium)

The Canals

by elgin99

Because of its canals Bruges is often called 'The Venice of the North'. But Bruges lies in deeper inland. In the Middle-Ages the waterways to Bruges had regularly adapted and enlarged to allow large trade ships to reach the city. The canals are exclusively used for tourist boats.

Waffles with whipped cream and strawberries

Waffles are an important part of the Belgian diet and are unique because of the special waffle irons used to bake them. Waffles can be served with a variety of toppings such as powdered sugar, whipped cream, ice cream, strawberries and chocolate.

BELGIUM, the country of beer

by MartinaH

No doubt, Belgium is the country of beer. It offers more than 450 varieties of beer with many different flavours and tastes. Here a little introduction:BLANCHE or white beer: that's wheat beer, light, smooth and a little sweet. It has only low alcohol content (try HOEGAARDEN).LAMBIC: is a non malted wheat beer.GUEUZE: it's made out of two or more Lambics.KRIEK: is a lambic beer additionned with raspberries or cherries. It's very refreshing and perfect in summer.RED BEERS: these beers are fruity, sweet and sour at once.

The one time the Belgian beats the Dutch.......

by tompt

Altough this picture wasn't taken in Belgium but In Valkenburg (Netherlands), we still want to put it here to boast the moral of our Belgian readers. (Valkenburg is very close to Belgium)This is picture taken in the Fluweelengrot, a marlstone cave. It is one of the many pictures painted on the walls there. But this one has a [ very unlikely ;-) ] story. On the left you see a Dutch man on the right it is a neighbour for Belgium. The Belgian has a club, but the Dutch has a sword swinging above his head. The question is who is going to win?The answer is fairly simple: the Belgian knight, because the Dutch sword is going to hit the rock above his head.[ We still think the story should be the other way around....... but this is what the sign said ]

paying your parkingfee

by tompt

Another strange belgian thing. Paying your parking fee you can choose: pay with coins or not.In the case of this parkingmeter in Lier the tariff is as follows:Tariff 1: pay with coins- 0,20 Euro per 24 minutes or- 2,00 Euro per 4 hoursif you don't pay with coins you automatically choose tariff 2.Tariff 2: half day ticket- 9,00 Euro from 9:00-14:00 or 14:00 to 19:00Do some calculating and make your choice...... 2 Euro per 4 hours or 9 Euro for 5 hours, tough, tough.Really, we will never understand the belgian method.

Flag of Wallonia

by xuessium

Belgium is a Federation of 3 main entities. The Flemish-speaking community of Flanders in the north, the French-speaking community of Wallonia in the south and the neutral capital region of Brussels (whereby both Flemish & French are official languages). Each community is represented by a flag and which is why when you are travelling through Belgium, there are so many flags fluttering around. There is the EU flag, the National flag, the regional flag, the provincial flag and in some cases, the city flag. Made for great photography with all those colours but confusing for folks..if they ever wanted to know what flag represents what. I think even the Belgians are themselves stumped at times. The flag of Wallonia is yellow with a red rooster. The rooster lifts one of his legs, and faces the hoist. It shows the kinship of the Walloons to the French (Gallic) rooster, which is singing, head up...
