National Flag of Belgium

by xuessium

The colours of the Belgian flag were taken from the arms of Brabant, a province in the Low Countries (the Netherlands + Belgium), which extended from the Walloon province of Walloon Brabant, over Flemish Brabant (and Brussels) and Antwerpen in Flanders, and in the Netherlands the province of North-Brabant. The arms of Brabant show on a black field a yellow lion facing the viewer's left, with a red tongue and nails. Extracted from:Flags Of The World

Gustave Wappers

by belgianchocolate

Maybe a name that not too many Belgiansknow. 'Gustave Wappers' is a bit a forgotten19th century painter , he is a Belgian Romantic. But when I first saw this work I wasimpressed by it size , theme , composition...it was a name I didn't forgot that soon.He came back in the picture in 2005 , when Belgium turned 175 years old. He's mostimportant work can be found on a stamp and is called 'Episode During the Belgian Revolution of 1830' He painted it in 1834 after a request of the young Belgian government. This monumental work can be seen in the' Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels'.He helped the young Belgian nation to search for something to be proud at. He studied in Antwerp and after that he went to Paris. In Paris romanticism was at a very highlevel and he was among the first to bring it to Belgium. He won a price with an historical painting on the Brussels salon for arts in 1830....at the...

Belgium : a complicated country

by Maeve_81

One thing you need to know when you come to Belgium and want to meet some locals : Belgium is a complicated country. The state of Belgium was 'created' (yes, really) in 1830 as a buffer between France and the Netherlands who both claimed the disputed land. This decision still has lots of impact. There always has been tension between the French-speaking Wallons and the Dutch-speaking Flemings, which has gone worse the last few years.Anyway, I'm not going to talk about politics. If you have some specific questions, you can always mail me - be my guest.Just remember to speak the local language. Speak French in Wallonia and Dutch (and English) in Flanders.

Help Belgium !

by tompt

We like to tease our Belgian friends with strange things we see in their country, all the general tips are about signs or situations we actually saw in Belgium. Some of these things may look strange in the eyes of the foreigner, and some also look strange in the eyes of the Belgians. Therefor we start with this sign (somewhere in the small town of Diksmuide) it says: SUPPORT BELGIUM !All tips here should be read with a sense of humor :-)

Belgian Chocolates

by lmkluque

Try the Belgian Chocolates. I hadn't realized that Belgians were known for their chocolates until a friend gave me a box. I've tried a couple of brands and have decided that the Pralines from LEONIDAS are my favorites. The price of a one pound box is about $32.00 and the price for a two pound box is $62.00, and the flavor is well worth the price. If you are a real chocolate connoisseur, you might what to check out all Belgiums brands and choose your own favorite! After strolling the Grand Place, it is a treat to find the Leonidas shop and buy a box of Chocolates, not to give as a gift, but to eat along the rest of the stroll. Selfish I know, but delicious.Bruxelles Store:43, bd. Jules Graindor1070 BruxellesTel.(02 522.19.5Shop on-line:Leonidas
