Your railtrips in Belgium

by Norali

Railtripping and walking, imho, are the best ways to visit Belgium. My friends the cows suggested we should use ox carts but hey, it's not fast enough... And I guess it's not those dainty cows who are going to pull me around Belgium...Railtripping to hop from a city to another and walking to visit each city. For sure, you can walk to hop from a city to another but you can't discover Belgian cities with train.:)For the country being so small, its railway net is one of most dense in the world (if not, the most). Best place to base yourself is Brussels and from there, nip over Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven go to Tournai, Ardennes, Namur, Liège... etc.. and lesser known towns.Check http://www.b-rail.be/ Also, Belgian cities are to discover looking up in the air !!Belgian architecture is as varied as its peoples got influences of other countries. Think of centuries of exchanges, French, Dutch...

Moules frites

by Norali

What this cow told me was about her weakness for moules (mussels) and frites (Belgian fries). Not only she told me that this is a feature of Belgian cuisine but also that the so-called "French fries" originate from Belgium. She asked me then to really translate "frites" as "Belgian fries".On mussels... yes, Belgians like mussels but paradoxically, the best mussels suppliers are the Dutch. In fact, a season can't be launched without the arrival of so-called "moules de Zélande". But it's better cooked in Belgium, of course ;-) While discussing with this cow, I told her that I like frites when they hadn't been deep-freezed... that I like them with fresh potatoes. She agreed. Then I told her that I did not eat frites so often because I don't have the so-called "friteuse" quite every Belgian household has. She stared at me, rolled her eyes. I made amendments by telling her that once in a...

Jacques Brel

by Norali

One of the cows in Galeries St-Hubert reminded of Jacques Brel's year. 2003 is this year in Belgium since it's the 25th anniversary of his death. This Belgian man contributed a lot to French-speaking singers' community. Many songs of him are appreciated by people of his generation as well as by youngsters in their twenties, in France, Belgium as well as in remote countries such as Canada. I guess the most famous of his songs is "Ne me quitte pas" that even people who don't speak French may have heard or know.Check the website since there are some events related to the celebration. Check to discover this great (and sometimes dark) artist of Belgium.http://www.jacquesbrel.beIf you are in Brussels, check here to know of events going on throughout the year. There are some exhibitions in those premices as well concerning the artist. I guess all you want to know about him is there.Fondation...

Kingdom of Belgium

by Norali

More about the Royal family: Whoelse than Royal cow to explain me this: "Belgium is a kingdom that gained Independence in 1831. It has been constitutional monarchy since then, with at its head, King Albert. Queen Paola is his spouse. Together, they have three kids: Prince Philippe and wife Mathilde, Princesse Astrid and husband Archiduke Lorenz, Prince Laurent and wife Claire. At the head of the government: the Belgian Prime minister, Guy Verhofstadt."For Royal cow being of the silent type, I'd suggest you browse below website to know more about Belgian Monarchy, Royal family, Palaces (Brussels and Laeken), Royal greenhouses in Laeken and Dynasty Museum, check below website.. in Dutch, French and German (Belgium's official languages) I would say that Belgians love their Royals. Thing is, in recent years or decades, the Family has faced some problems for not receiving the support from all...

Belgium: a federal state

by Norali

Whispered by one of the cows: "Try to locate some 10 millions of inhabitants in a small European country of some 32 545 sq km and you have Belgium. Since its Independence, in 1831, Belgium has been a constitutional monarchy in a central state. Constitution has been changed in 1993 to grant the country with a Federal state status.Compared to a country like Madagascar with its 14-15 millions of inhabitants spread in 587 000 sq km, it's a lot dense country. Thing is, Belgium is one of most densely inhabitated countries in the world (!). It is 3 times as dense as neighbouring France with, for instance, 58 millions persons in 549 000 sq km. It's more dense than Germany also**.Now, try to think that those 10 million belong to:- 3 Regions (Flemish region, Walloon region and region of Bruxelles- Capitale);- 10 Provinces (Antwerpen; Western Flanders; Eastern Flanders; Limburg; Hainault; Flemish...

Belgian directions are confusing

by tompt

When travelling in Belgium it often happens we are on the wrong road. This is sometimes our own fault, but other times it is just because the signs are not as clear as we are used to at home. The picture shows no traffic signposts, but an almost as confusing situation in the central station of Brussels. There is a sign (next to the stairs), stating: 60 meters to the left for stairs. Another one says the same thing but then to the right. The yellow sign above our heads states: stairs at 15 meters, back. And then there is the sign up the stairs to the metro. (Isn't that supposed to be down for the subway?)

Belgian Beer - Leffe Blonde

by grayfo

The beer has a bubbly, thick but short-lived head. Aroma is characteristically Belgian, with esters, phenols and spice (coriander). There is also toffee in the aroma, with a woody, perhaps coniferous hint from the phenols. On the palate it has quite a lively fizz, with a spicy hop flavour and a little spirit kick. Fruit includes apples, sharp lemon, almond and vanilla - the cumulative effect is somehow like nougat but without the sweetness. Vanilla and caramel move toward a more hoppy finish which, coupled with the liveliness on the tongue, makes for a moreish quality. Aftertaste is a complex mixture of phenol, banana and toffee. It is quite spirity, with alcohol vapour warmth in the throat. This is a very pleasant, complex and well-rounded beer from Leffe. how long is a week ??

by tompt

Belgians enjoy the good things in life. Therefor if they have a special festive week, they try to expand it as long as they can.In this case it is the Week of the Sea. And it lasts from 23 april 2004 to 31 may 2004. ( in our country that is more than a month!! )Not completely sure we saw it the right way we asked our Belgian friends: Why is a week in Belgium longer than a month in Holland? Here are the answers:-Probably because of our relaxed way of life, things seem to last longer.-We Belgians are timeless, a giant step forwards in this hectic world. But as ever you Dutch will understand and follow, it only takes some time... - I know my friends !-It is the dutch version of the pamflet. Everybody knows they are cheap and can last for a month on the budget others use in a week........ Therefor this special week is a little bit expanded for our dutch neighbours. .- And it doesn't mention...
