drive slowly.........

by tompt

Belgium is not very big, if you travel from the Netherlands to France it takes an hour to cross it. But as said before the belgians like to enjoy the good things in life. So they drive very slowly through their country to enjoy more of it. When arriving at the France border we encountered this sign with the speed limits in France. Notice the small sign below " end of the 30km/h zone". Well at that pace it would take a while to cross the belgian zone.........

The Eurosong contest!

by belgianchocolate

The best proof of our very individual Belgiantaste in music is the Eurosong contest. Latests year we voted the candidate out of a few douzains by smsor televoting. And even then we turn out last. Ok ok , we once finished first , a wallon girl named 'Sandra Kim' won at age14. J'aime J'aime la vie.It is the flemish parth that never does anything. In 1974 this man and woman , in real lifethey are also married , went to the songcontest and they turned last. That song is still popular in belgium. They are gay icons as well.I saw them at an open air concert in Brussels..The audience went mad hearing 'Baby baby'..'De wereld is een....'.They are quit funny and amuzing and they canreally sing. You can run in to them on a cruisebecause they are asked for that a lot... 'Nicole and Hugo'

Guido Belcanto

by belgianchocolate

Belgium and music - it sounds like a weird combination? I don't know. It is not that Belgiumhas a bunch or famous singers but ...I have to bring the news that we are a musical country. A lot of people here have played an instrumentat some phase in their life. Anyway , a couple of weeks ago I went to see'Guido Belcanto' , most flemish people know thatname. But do they know his music? He is weird , camp , kitch...he is a transvestiteand sings about it , but he is also facinated bywomen and has a kid son. He looks greatwith red nails and has a enchanting voice. His hair looks like a exploded mattress. His songs are dramatic and funny at the sametime. A song like his we call a 'smartlap'.He filles the stage with a barrel organ , a contrabass , a piano , an accordeon anda lot of charisma. And all that makes him a typical product of flanders.I made this little collage to introduce him. If you...

Landscape of Wallonia (Wallonie) - under constr

by Norali

Now: a focus on the Southern area that comprehends Wallonia (Wallonie). It is inhabited by the French-speaking Walloon people. The German-speaking minority is in Wallonia area too. As for landscape, it offers of course the so-called Ardenne hills. The Ardenne is a natural tourist attraction located South, far South in the highest area of Belgium. It is the densely wooded part of Belgium. There lie towns like Durbuy, La Roche en Ardenne, Rochefort, gorgeous landscape and rich history. Still, the Ardenne is part of many Belgian provinces and yes, better known towns like Namur, Liège are also in the Ardenne. http://www.visitbelgium.com/bxart03.htm Located from south of La Sambre and La Meuse, it comprehends beautiful valleys of La Meuse and La Ourthe rivers and its numerous historical monuments. Then, Between the Vesder and the Meuse lies the Country of Herve which due to its rich clay soil...

Landscape of Flanders (Vlaanderen) - under constr°

by Norali

Roughly speaking, Belgium is divided between Flanders and Wallonia. Northern area comprehends Flanders (Vlaanderen) as Southern area comprehends Wallonia (Wallonie). More precisely, it is divided so according to the peoples who inhabit it: the Dutch-speaking Flemish in the North & the French-speaking Walloon in the South. The German- speaking minority is in Wallonia.Weird enough, the country is divided as if you could draw a horizontal line (just beneath Brussels Region) to separate it in two. More surface for Wallonia (it occupies 55% of the territory) but Flanders is more dense, hence the majority of Flemish people. Also, the same imaginary line divides Brabant in two: Flemish Brabant (North) & Walloon Brabant (South). As for tourism & landscapes, Flanders may appear as only green flat areas with maize fields. No, no, there is more than that. For sure, the hills there don't exceed 100m...

Brussels, capital city

by Norali

This cow must be the most predictable among the whole set. She just decided to be spotted with the most famous of Brussels citizens: the Manneken pis.Soo smart! I guess she ended up as the most photographed cow in Brussels streets. When I asked her about that, she just smiled. Then told me that this is the least of her concerns. She was just happy protecting the little peeing boy. Nostalgic, romantic, she began talking about what you may see in Brussels.. You know, those classic landmarks and things to do. I was listening to her, with other persons in the audience when one of us told her that we are not tourists, that we know what she was talking about. She apologized for not having noticed it and talked about the difficulty to work under this hitting sun. Sympathy for her! To know more of Brussels, go to my Brussels page, of course. - Not a city to discover and love in one day.- The...
