TRAPPIST BEER
Trappist beers are all top fermented ales – with the one exception of the Koningshoeven Bockbier. The different beers produced by each abbey are usually denoted in some manner denoting the relative strength a beer has within the brewery’s line up – single, double, triple. There used to be many more Trappist breweries but only seven survive – six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands. Among the group you will find some of the best beers in the World. To qualify as a “Trappist Beer” the beer must be brewed in a Trappist abbey by or under the control of Trappist monks. Commercial orientation and brewing choices are decided upon by the monastic community. Profits go back to the running of the abbey and towards charities that are decided upon by the community.
