TRAPPIST BEER

by mtncorg

Trappist beers are all top fermented ales – with the one exception of the Koningshoeven Bockbier. The different beers produced by each abbey are usually denoted in some manner denoting the relative strength a beer has within the brewery’s line up – single, double, triple. There used to be many more Trappist breweries but only seven survive – six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands. Among the group you will find some of the best beers in the World. To qualify as a “Trappist Beer” the beer must be brewed in a Trappist abbey by or under the control of Trappist monks. Commercial orientation and brewing choices are decided upon by the monastic community. Profits go back to the running of the abbey and towards charities that are decided upon by the community. Some of the abbeys produce much more beer than the others – Chimay, Westmalle and Koningshoeven produce the vast majority with Orval...

Zebra crossings

1 way to distinguish a Walloon from a Flemish guy

by Museeuw

Of course there's the language, but there's another way (although not full-proof) to distinguish Walloon from Flemish guys. When people meet in Belgium, they often only shake hands, but equally often they give each other a kiss on the cheeck. This is so in both parts of the country, with one big difference: Walloon men also often give each other a kiss on the cheek, whereas Flemish men never do that (of course there's the proverbial exception).

Cycling groups on Sunday morning

by Museeuw

I'm not at all sure in how much this is a trend in the southern part of Belgium and in the rest of the world, but in Flanders it is very popular. Every village has one or more cycling clubs where men come together every Sunday morning from Spring to Autumn to ride a tour of about 70 or 80 km. Usually they all wear the same clothes and ride 2 by 2 on the main road, followed by a car with a sign (danger sign with a bicycle) on top. Remember, from the moment that they are with more than 15, they are allowed to ride on the main road. When you meet a group like that on a Sunday morning, please be careful. Also on Saturday you can see a lot of cyclists like that, but it's mainly a Sunday morning thing. You almost never see them on Sunday afternoon, because that's a time to spend with the family. After their tour, a lot of them go to their club pub to refill the lost fluids. :-)

Language lessons

by sarahandgareth

Bear in mind that Belgium has two official languages, French and Flemish (Dutch). While Brussels is bilingual (even trilingual, since so many people speak English), the French and Flemish communities have not always been on the best of terms, so it's never a bad idea to be sensitive to whatever the local language is, rather than charging ahead oblivious. Many Flemish speakers know some French, and vice versa, but they don't always speak the other language willingly, while just a half hour from Brussels you'll encounter many people who speak a strongly-accented Flemish and not much else. Learning even the tiniest handful of words in one or both languages will get you far: it's a great signal of your interest in the country and its cultures.

Belgian National Feastday.

by breughel

21st of July is our national feast.Yesterday 21/07/2007 a journalist of the Belgian Francophone TV (RTBF) asked Mr. Yves Leterme, a Flemish (perfectly bilingual) politician who is probably the next prime minister, what historical event is commemorated on July 21st. Mr. Leterme said it was the proclamation of our constitution. This is wrong, it was the day on which our first King Leopold I took oath in 1831.After this the journalist asked Mr. Leterme to sing part or our national anthem the "Brabançonne" and here our future prime minister started to sing … "La Marseillaise" the French national anthem! This was quite funny because the political party lead by him is not very fond of French speaking Belgians. To be honest, I must add that when the journalist asked Mr. Rudy Demotte President of Wallonie the same question he also gave the wrong answer. When questioned on the same subject, our...

Mussels From Zeeland - ZEEUWSE MOSSELEN.

by breughel

There are mussels on all European coasts but only mussels from the Zeeland waters (Oosterschelde) are used for the Belgian moules frites. The large scale production and commercialisation is centred at Yerseke. In 2006 the Dutch mussel producers supplied 30 million kilos to Belgium. There are more and more complaints in Belgium about the ever increasing prices of the mussels from Holland. It is a fact that the last harvest has been bad, low production and poor quality (more shell than flesh!) but some suspect the Dutch producers of price manipulations. When I was a kid, mussels were a popular dish, also the poor could afford them. Nowadays mussels are at the same price level as steak!Other mussels than Dutch have been tried but … they taste different at least in our imagination. Is it dangerous to eat mussels?I have never been sick with mussels but I have been with oysters. The mussels of...

HUNDREDS of BELGIAN BEERS.

by breughel

Other VT members from Belgium and abroad wrote here about our beers and I will not repeat their often enthusiast comments. One point to be noted is that we were anxious in Belgium when started the merger phenomena of many of our breweries ending in a world wide company such as Inbev. We feared that these mergers would lead to the loss of the variety of our beers.Fortunately the Belgian owners and the management promoted the special beers so that types which had disappeared from the market were resuscitated and brewed again. In all abbeys there was a search for forgotten receipts of Trappists and others monk's beers so that nowadays there are much more special beers on the market as a half century ago. A lot of small breweries disappeared but their production of special beers was taken over by the big ones.At the same time there was worldwide promotion of the Belgian beers as well the...

MOULES CASSEROLE with FRITES.

by breughel

Mussels with frites are a national dish in Belgium. We call them "moules casserole" as they are cooked in a "casserole" which is a large pan of minimum 3 litres content. This volume is needed to prepare the usual amount of 1 kg mussels per person. This quantity of mussels contains about 250 gr. of flesh. The crux of the matter are the mussels. They are breed in the waters of Zeeland (South west of the Netherlands) and the flesh is pale. This type is called "Zeeuwse mosselen".They are exported to Belgium where they are cooked and eaten in huge quantities during the months from August to end of March. The Belgian preparation of the "Moules Casserole" is with celery, onions, carrots, parsley, pepper and the (sea) water contained in the mussels. My wife was not willing to give more details about the preparation. After the "French fries" story she insists on keeping secret our culinary...
