This year, Belgium celebates its 175th birthday as well as the 25 years of federalism established in our country. The occasion for many festivities, among which a remarkable July 21st, Belgian independence day. Many features of our country’s personality were represented during the show held Place Rogier in Brussels. A giant boat with on board various Magritte figures, with the painter’s famous hat put on, distributing seagulls to the spectators, glided down the Boulevard du Jardin Botanique the Place Rogier, where Mrs Belgium met Miss Federalism for an incredible show. Rain, inevitable symbol of our country, also invited itself to the party, and caused the show and the fireworks to stop earlier than it should have been. But national joy was present, inspite of the most representative characteristic of our beloved Belgium…the “drache nationale” :-)

On 21 july Belgium celebrates it's independence day.We call it our national holiday - nationale feestdag. On that day 1830 Belgium kicked out the Dutchand assumed they would do better on their own. ;-)Since we can compare the Netherlands with Belgiumwe can say we do things different. ;-)Don't expect too much of patriotisme this day.Belgians motto seems to be 'act normal , that is already crazy enough'. When the dutch seem to dress up all in orange thatday ...you can easly count the flags in the streets of Brussels---with one hand. But it is always worth going to brussels. At two o'clock there is a military parade...most people go there to see what hat the queen is wearing for the occasion.(the poor lady has to watch that crap every year , she sometimes can't resist of doing some gaping)The royal family can be found in the tribune in front of the palace. And there is a lot of eating and...

While in big parts of the world sugar is gainedfrom cane ...we in Belgium gain our sugarfrom sugar beet.We only have one well known brand.'Tiense suiker' Sugar from the cityof Tienen , a small flanders city. You might just want to buy some of their newones. They are in a luxury box and containdifferent flavors for the coffee. (amaretto , Irish cream , praliné and chocolate...)Look for the typical T.The picture shows you the 'basic' one likeserved in restaurants , bars , hotels...

Even if we demolished half of our heritagethere is still so much left. Watch out for thesign in the picture , it indicates that the buildingyou are looking at is a registered monument.Click here for their interesting website.YES! also available in English.(a limited edition) It doesn't always mean that it is an interestingbuilding or landscape. But it means that it is typical ,has a story and by all means that we want topreserve it.

I imagine most people associate Belgium with beer to at least some extent. One of the things I learned over there, and you see it in all the pubs, is that each brand of beer has its own glass. Some are short and fat, some are tall and narrow, others are shaped like a bulb. This is, apparently, not just some gimmick or quaint custom. The brewers themselves have designed these glasses to really bring out the full flavor of their beer, kind of direct it to the part of your mouth that will taste it the most, or the best. A little experimenting taught me this is really true, these beers should be consumed from the glass designed by the brewers. This is beer connoisseurships on a higher level than I could ever get accustomed to. But isn't that the fun of travel?

Sint-Denijs-Westrem is a location near Ghent; Several exhibitions are organised at the famous Expo Hallen. One of them are the Floralies of Ghent, another one is the erotic festival, but this is a page apart. The flower and green plant exhibition : Artistic stands, a novelty at the flower and plant show, edition 2005 is definately an added value and stimulates the competiton between the many exhibitors

I saw this prayer to the lord in heaven when he stayed in Ghent, not so long ago.Free translation : "Oh LordOur Lord, present in all the pubs of Ghent, your miracle of turning water into genever will be praised.Give us our daily genever, and my apologizes for the outstanding accounts.Release me from the empty glasses."AMENDifferent flavours - and the best but most expensive you will find during the yearly "Gentsche Fieste" at the local stands - ask Danielle- she survived the genever tour.

One of the culinary tips whenever visiting Belgium. Next to chocolate we have home made "Gentsche Waffles", "Waffles Liegois""Waffles Brusselois" and in case of Gent you will find simply on the "Groentenmarkt" the best waffles in town, sugar waffles made by natural ingredients

for those who are not a sweet tooth, there is the Beer....belgian Beer is very ...drinkable LOL.growing up in Germany, now that is a real compliment for the Belgians, who realy brew a good Beer. personally I like the smoothness of Stella Artois or Leffe, which we can buy also here in NZ. but of course there are much more then these two. In Brugge...you actually can smell the Breweries....and it is all good.but don't get me wrong, Belgian has many old Customs, not only Chocolate or Beer, find out out for yourself.
