Brussels from top... for free

by Norali

It is possible to visit the top of the arches in Jubelpark / 50aire. We did it during the Brussels meeting on Nov.30.This grants you with a nice view on the center of Brussels and the South. From far, you would see most of Brussels landmarks too. Plus, it is free. Entry is in Army and Military history museum. Enter the museum and it's at your left. You will have to pass the little passage in front of the information stand at your right though. Then take the lift till the top. You will be able to see both parts of the arches. Pay attention to deadline: last time to stay on top of the arches is 11.45 am (but you'd be ousted at 11.40am :). So be sure to arrive there at 11.30 am at latest. It is nice to see what the urban planners of the past had in mind. The arches were built to celebrate Belgian 50th Independance anniversary. The park in itself was built to liaise the center of the city to...

Veurne: small Bruges

by Mahieu

Veurne is a small city between Bruges and the Belgian coast. If you're visiting either Bruges, Oostende or De Panne, then don't hesitate to spend half a day in this beautiful place. It is not too touristic, so you'll have plenty of time and space to enjoy! Find out more on my Veurne pages!

Waterloo: 18th of June 1815

by Mahieu

Waterloo, is a small city in the Belgian province of Walloon-Brabant (Brabant-Wallon). The city owes its fame to the battle which took place on the 18th of June 1815. The Battle of Waterloo was fought between the French, under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Allied armies commanded by the Duke of Wellington from Britain and General Bl?cher from Prussia. A lot of different places here remind of the horrible battle that happened. The most famous one is possibly "The Lion Hill" (la Butte du Lion) which commemorates the bravery of the Prince of Orange, who was wounded here.Location: Waterloo is about 20 km from Brussels. For more information: check out my Waterloo page!

Villers Abbey

by Mahieu

To me, this is one of the hidden secrets of Belgium. A very nice place that deserves to be discovered! In 1146 one abbot, twelve monks and five lay brothers made the journey from Clairvaux to Villers to found an abbey there. A few months later, they re-sited the monastery, lower down in the valley, where it is situated now. The abbey was completely rebuilt by the end of the 13th Century and some parts of it are still being restorated today.Location: +/- 30 km from Brussels, close to Nivelles. More info on my Villers-La-Ville page!

Kriek beer

by Norali

This specialist in Kriek beer entertained my ears and teased my imagination...She talked about Belgian beer specialties. True, Belgium is renowned for fruit beers. Kriek is the most known as cherry beer but there are peach, dewberry, apricot, grape (?) and raspberry beers as well.I remembered having asked her whether the grape beer is not just wine. She was furious, yelling in the whole mall that I was an ignorant. I admitted I was but then why yelling? Those cows... elles voient facilement rouge!Kriek is not that off beat track, it's rather the use of grape, apricot that seems unusual to me. So, dear travellers, if you come to taste beer here, skip Jupiler and look for those more specific items.

The Flemish Ardennes

by tompt

The Flemish Ardennes are found in the province of Oost Vlaanderen. The hills come out of nothing, and are sometimes very steep. The cobblestone roads are a torture for cyclist, yet it is a very populair cycling area. The city of Oudenaarde, the centre of the region is also a nice city to visit. The town hall, St Walburga church, just a few of the highlights.

Brussels-Colourfull Street

by prleprle

I'm not sure if I'm right but I think that on the photo is the "Petite Rue des Bouchers" (street of the butchers) in the medieval center of Brussels, famous for the fact that every house in the street is a restaurant. It was rainy that day when I was there and most of time we spent in pubs with beer. The street is closed for traffic (anyway it is too narrow to let cars pass), and this allows the restaurants to exhibit some of their products (especially sea-food and fish). In some of the wider parts of the street it is also possible to eat and drink outside, watching the crowd strolling between the quaint, narrow houses.

The Citadel of Namur

by Paul2001

The Citadel of Namur is the one attraction in Namur that I think should be included as a must-see. It is both a marvelous piece of architecture and historically very important. This location, dominating the Meuse Valley has been fortified since Roman and Celtic times. However what you see today was actually constructed by the Dutch in the 17th century and added upon by the great French military architect Vauban. The citadel is a massive, rambling place with thick walls designed to deflect the most powerful of 17th century cannons. There is a barracks with a small military museum that is dedicated to a local regiment and the military history of the region. Apparently the grounds were used by General Omar Bradley as a headquarters during World War II. There are restaurants overlooking the Meuse Valley that offer splendid views. There is a cable car up to the citadel or you can walk up like...
