Squeezed between the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France, Belgium is one of Europe's tiddlers. The north is flat, the south dominated by the picturesque Ardennes and the 65km North Sea coastline monopolised by resorts, except for a few patches of windswept dunes. Lower Belgium is criss-crossed by a network of canals. Seasons are mild, but the warmest months (July and August) are also the wettest.

When to go

by YellowFire

You're unlikely to encounter extremes in weather during an average Belgian year. April to September is the warmest time, but be prepared for grey skies and soggy streets no matter what time of year you go. Visitors may be forgiven for assuming umbrellas and raincoats are part of the Belgian national dress.

Depending on the time of year. Take solid shoes if you are planning to walk a lot. Also, take appropriate dresses if you intend to visit the churches. Well, with all those sights you just have to take lots of film!!! I would suggest packing at least two cameras, especially in summer. No, it's not that in summer they break down more quickly:))) It is just that you should put different films in them. One should be charged with ISO 200 film - the weather is almost always sunny, so it would be a right idea. And the other is to have ISO 400 (or, even better, ISO 800) film so that you would get good photos inside the Cathedrals and other monuments (or at night) when can not or do not wish to use flash. As for availability, all the photo supplies you might possibly need can be found easily in all the country. ATMs and Plastic money: they are the most convenient way to take your money...

Depends on the time of your travel. In summer it's about 17°-20° Celsius and in winter for about 0°-5° Celsius. But it's surely rainy in Belgium. Maybe it's a good tip to be always prepared on that.

The best bag to take if you are staying in a hotel/apartment would be a suitcase. It is always best to pack a few extra items just in case. I always take a suitcase if I staying somewhere for more than 4 days. A small case will do if staying for a weekend. If you are back-packing and staying in youth hostels the best thing to take is a big rucksack. Business Travel You do not need to bring any particular toiletries as the shops stock most things you can buy at home. Do bring all prescribed medicines with you and keep them in their labelled containers. You do not need to bring any special equipment or gear when travelling to Belgium. I would suggest you bring the following:* an umbrella (the weather is unpredictable like the British weather)* a camera (a must – Belgium is such a beautiful country you’ll want to capture all your special moments* a map (driving map is essential if...

Take a cooling box with you to make sure that good piece of chocolate doesn't melt on your way home. Always tkae your raincoat with you, because you never know when it starts raining in Belgium. And take warm clothes as well as light clothing with you. Don't forget your sunglasses for the finishing touch! Take mints with you(or gum) to eat when you have been drinking a lot of beer..You will also need a toothbrush to take with you in your bag when visiting the city, because you will be seduced by the tasty waffles and extremely good chocolate. Ofcourse you can also buy everything when you are there. As Belgium is highly developed you will not have any problems with Photo Equipment, but watch out with the cost of what you buy! there is no beach, but you can go to 'De Blaarmeersen' where you can do windsurfing, eat icecream, skate, go skiing!, and swim. There is also a camping and a...

Some bigger size clothing for when you leave in an invariably bloated state. A good sense of humor. The Belgians seem to have one. Where else would you find a national treasure, the Mannekin Pis, to be a statue of a boy taking a pee.

My rule of thumb is to take enough clothes for one week OR for the length of the trip PLUS two days, whichever is shorter. If you are traveling on business, you can probably pack along two suits and rotate between them. Try to take different colors of shirts/blouses; mixing and matching might fool people into thinking you brought more clothes than you did. That's the whole idea, isn't it? ;-D If you are going on an extended trip, pick one color and stick with it... like say black. If you are part of the Generation X (ahem!). REJOICE! Why? Because black travels very well. You can get ketchup stains all over your black jeans or coffee stained on your black t-shirt... and nobody will ever notice! Just make sure they don't stand too close to you to catch a whiff of the...er... Well, I'm sure you know what I mean! :-)) Your daily necessities (like toothbrush, toothpaste, dentures... oops,...
