    Six stages

    The big stage

Favorite thing: So for this walking concert - Voices under the Stars, there were invited 6 different Vocal groups. And they were performing on 6 different stages located at different places in between the old ruins of the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville.

On the big picture you can see the big stage which was located on the working courtyard of the Abbey.

This was also the location were for the final all the groups came together and brought unforgettable apotheoses even with fire works in the background.

Fondest memory: The many chicken-skin moments during the concert

    Voices under the Stars

    Entry ticket

Favorite thing: It was the fourth edition of the walking concert Voices under the Stars ( Stemmen onder de sterren / Nuits des Choeurs ).

It looks as this as a success story as every year they have more visitors. (In 2001 : 10.000 visitors, in 2002 : 12.000 visitors, in 2003 : 19.000 visitors), how many visitors there were in 2004 that I do not know, but there were many.

It is the first time that I have been there, and it was great to hear and to see these different vocal groups in such magnificent scenery of an old Abbey.

Entry price was 31,00 Euro, not cheap but do not forget you get 6 different groups and a big apotheoses as final act.

    cloister

Favorite thing: These magnificent Abbey ruins are probably the most important of Belgium.

This Cistercian Abbey was built in the 12th century, by Saint Bernardus. It is surely the most impressive Abbey that ever has been built in our country.
Year after year, century after century this Abbey is growing. And this till the 18th century, when a French invasion destroys it and turns it over into a ruin.

In 1982 the Belgium State has bought this complex. And from then on they started restoring the Abbey and opened for the public to visit.

At the picture you see the Cloister with in the back the remains of the big (and well preserved) Abbey Church

    Great scenery

    great ruins

Favorite thing: At the walking concert Voices under the Stars, there were performing six vocal groups of very high quality.

They were performing at six different locations in the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville.

So all evening you needed to walk from one stage to another stage. Like this it was great to discover the complete Abbey ground (almost the complete).

You really passed some picturesque parts of the Abbey. And also when it became darker the abbey was beautifully lighted.

Like this building with the big windows which was the former Refectory.

    Visiting the Abbey

by filipdebont Written Sep 19, 2004

    The entry gate

Favorite thing: So I visited the Abbey by the occasion of the walking concert Voices under the Stars, which was a great way to see all these magnificent ruins.

But this is such a beautiful place that I will certainly come back here and do a regular visit with a guide. That way you can hear more on the history of this Abbey.

We entered the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville via the main entrance gate. The first floor of this former entry gate was the Abbeys pharmacy.
