    LES JARDINS D'ANNEVOIE BELGIUM

    LE CHâREAU D'ANNEVOIE....

Ahhhh, here are some wonderful gardens and my love for trees got me there.......and made me enjoy the atmosphere, forget my troubles for some time and relax....

These Gardens of Annevoie are well-known for their great beauty, their great aesthetic, historic and cultural value.

They are listed as an important feature of the HERITAGE OF WALLONIA (the French speaking part of BELGIUM)

They tastefully combine the magic of water and the pure lines of a stylish garden.

They were laid out in 1758 by CHARLES-ALEXIS DE MONTPELLIER and temper the rigour of the formal symmetry of the FRENCH garden with the English taste for the picturesque and the Italian of the many fountains.

Around each and every corner you will experience a new emotion, ranging from the majesty of the grand perspective to the cosy warmth of the boscage.....

The reflections (and I do so love reflections!) of the water, in the water, emphasise the elegant architecture of the château, which is a superb 18th Century MANOR HOUSE.

A real MUST for those who, as I do, adore gardens, trees, water and a combination of these ......

You can visit the gardens as well as the château!

    HUY ARDENNES BELGIUM

When we visited DURBUY we toured THE ARDENNES extensively ....... and so we arrived at HUY one day.

This city really was a sweet, unexpected surprise.......
Like a present it was finding this spot on a very Autumnal day.

Lots of the photographs are already in my DURBUY PAGE , so....you are invited, don't tell me I forgot doing that!!

Here I shall just name a few facts about HUY which must be incentives for you to visit this place....

It is situated at the 'ENTRANCE" of the ARDENNES......or should I say of PARADISE?

    Let me continue:

    it has a wonderful fort.....
a great MUSEUM, where we spent quite some time....
    there are ancient MONUMENTS....
    a miniature-golf course.....
une maison de la CULTURE: where it is a pleasure goofing about....
    there are swimming pools.......

    and more, see next tip!!!

    ANOTHER CHâTEAU / CASTLE....

    by eden_teuling Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    THE CASTLE OF LA-ROCHE-EN-ARDENNE BELGIUM

Europe must have been dotted with Castles, castles and churches.......

This is about LA ROCH-EN-ARDENNE where are great ruins (contrad.in term.!?) of an medaeival castle.
It was built between 11th, 12th & 14th Century and the remains show us how sturdy, sombre, dark, rough and impressive it must have been.....once......long ago.....

It is nestled in a green VALLEY formed by RIVER OURTHE and the steep slopes of the DEISTER MOUNTAIN.

After the 12th Century the castle was an important DEFENCE CONSTRUCTION in a strategic place and became a STAGE, A HALTING PLACE on the route from LOMBARDYE (trading route for English wool)

The Castle was a residence till 1780, after that time all kinds of awful events took place and bit by bit the castle became a ruin......and the inhabitants of LA ROCHE loved everything they could lay their hands on.......

It is taking lots of time to "uncover" the Castle: the French once covered most of it with 3000m3 metres of earth and stones to protect the vaulted halls during one of the many "wars".

    There are guided tours........very interesting....

    There is also a FALCONER......

Here you can see him, in his medaeival outfit: he is so lucky that he can call himself: the castle's FALCONER, has a faconry there....

See that sweet & proud smile.....

His name is GEROEN DE SMET

Each day between 1st April and 31st August you can admire the results of his falconry.....and enjoy the shows / performances

    Route 14

Its best to make the Abbey the destination of one of your walks but even if you can't do manage this, make sure you pass by. The nature is amazing and it's worth the effort if you don't feel like entering the abbey or the shop.

The Abbey was founded in 1935 by French followers of the Cistercian Order which felt persecuted in France.

    Bouillon Castle

by Scarlie Updated Apr 4, 2005
    Godfry's Castle

Visit the Castle of Godfry (Godefroid) of Bouillon. Godfry sold the castle to raise money for the First Crusade, but it still bears his name.

It's a nice historic break, with something to learn... plus pretty nice view of the Semois and the town.

    BOUILLON AND ITS CHâTEAU (CASTLE)....

    by eden_teuling Updated Oct 29, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    CHTEAU BOUILLON BELGIUM...

BOUILLON: jewel of the SEMOIS and the Semois is a wonderful stream that freely flows through the woody ARDENNES.....and in the very heart of these ARDENNES you will find BOUILLON......

This indeed is a place to be for a real holiday!

It is a not too big effervescent town that has a lot on offer: plenty of SHOPS, lots of HOTELS, an outstanding CUISINE, ARDENNES-SPECIALITIES, famous CELEBRITIES, extensive TOURISTIC FACILITIES, hundreds of kilometers of SIGN POSTED paths, innumerable opportunities for LEISURE and, last but not least: ITS CHâTEAU, ITS CASTLE.....

This is the oldest and most interesting feudal castle in BELGIUM. This fortress probably goes back to the 8th Century, but the first records date from 988...........imagine that era!!!!

The CASTLE'S existence was made immortal by the heroic Godfrey of BOUILLON, leader of the FIRST CRUSADE in 1096 and proclaimed King of Jerusalem.

(it is of no importance to mention MY PERSONAL views / ideas as for the CRUSADES!!)

The Castle was militarily occupied till 1830.....

Of course this wonderful building is open to the public!

(HOW ABOUT A VISIT OF THE CASTLE DURING THE NIGHT?? WITH TORCHES TO LIGHT THE WAY????)

    FOR MORE INFO.....SEE BELOW....

NOTE: combi-tickets are available (castle + museums)

MUSéE DE LA BATAILLE DES ARDENNES

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

MUSE DE LA BATAILLE DES ARDENNES 19445 - 1945...

This is a MUSEUM with a very special collection. For over 25 years a number of ethousiast people have worked very hard to get as many items for this museum from private collections as possible.

You can see photographs which show you the DESTRUCTION of LA ROCHE by the ALLIED FORCES during the winter of 1944 - 1945.

The collection contains 20 cars, some 100 mannequins with the clothes and outfit ot that time and lots of MATERIAL of armies that fought here.....and who doesn't know about PATTON and his prayer??

In glass cases you can see reconstructions of several important events that took place here at that time.....and they seem to be real, reality......it will give you goos-flesh......and make you think!

HERE AGAIN WE CAN SEE HOW USELESS, HOW CRUEL, HOW EVEIL WAGING WAR IS! IT SHOULD BE A WARNING, BUT......

    LA CHARMILLE DE THEUX

Theux is situated in FRANCHIMONT, a region of HISTORY & TRADITION.

Here you see a CHARMILLE and I do love these lanes: CHARMILLES are lane bordered by trees or bushes (often hotnbeam) that, while growing higher and higher will form an arch and......with an ARCH of trees/plants always come such a special atmosphere, e.g. when the sun dapples the lanes with millions of minute suns.......and the wind can't tease you while cycling there and there are more advantages.......go to THEUX and experience this pretty city!

There also is the CHURCH called: St. Hermès & Alexandre,

a wonderful old chapel that goes by the name of: CHAPELLE FYON,

A little village, called LA REID, where there is an area for wildlife (WOLVES) , a fountain on the market square, old bridges and a CHâTEAU.....and so much more.... just walk there and enjoy!

    LES POTIERS DE BARVEAUX

The Potters from BARVEAUX create the most wonderful works of art: bowls, pot and jars, vases and plates, richely decorated and on demand with names/dates or something like that: a real personal gift!

They work in a traditional way of the ARDENNES, I saw LE TOURNAGE (throwing of pots), le séchage (the drying) and much more...

Interested in POTTERS' WORK? NAMUR PAGE

Extremely friendly people who speak French but also Dutch (Vlaams)

There is a restaurant for drinks, and snacks and a storehouse at the factory: here you can walk around and feel "l'embarras du choix"......

    They are open each weekday.
They have a shop in DURBUY: Rue des récollectines 19 B-6940 DURBUY (see my DURBUY PAGE .......lots of travelogues there.....)

    ESPACE DE SAVEURS....

    by eden_teuling Updated Oct 28, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

VILLE DE HERVE, UNE SAVEUR D'AVANCE....

This really is a place of tast, tis VILLE DE HERVE......

This sweet place is situated between the low lands of The Netherlands and the slopes of the forests of the EIFEL in Germany!

It is a small place, that seems to be forgotten by the world, it seems such a lost place but.....that is only what it SEEMS to be.... in reality this spot, PAYS DE HERVE, in the quiet woods with the bluestone rocks is alive & kicking!!

It is here that a very special kind of CHEESE is made, in to traditional ways and the cheese makers say: it is a matter of CARE & PATIENCE....EXPERIENCE & KNOW-HOW ..and DE L'AMOUR DU MéTIER: LOVE OF THE JOB....

LA MORGE is the name of the wonderful pinkish-yellow skin, caused by a special bacterium.

It also needs to be a strong man who is maker of the cheese, it is a quite demanding job!

The second surprise is THE SIROPERIE, where jams & juices are made from fresh fruits and only fruits: NO sugar is added, nor artificial colours and these sweet rpoducts are made on an open fire.....really "SIROP ARTISANAL" ! Of course I can recommend both products wholeheartedly to you.

Do go there and relax and enjoy: and remember that they will ask you TO TASTE THEIR PRODUCTS....

You can visit here during the summer months of JULY & AUGUST, daily!

For reservations and more information: see below.......
