Charleroi Things to Do

  • Marcinelle street

The most traditional street in Charleroi is located in the low city. It is not long, doesn't show much activity, but it is lined with a very harmonious rank of buildings, some of the classified.

  • Saint Antoine de Padua (wrong - de...

Located at the exit of a passage from the Stock exchange, this church is a Neo Classical building, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, and it was built in 1830.It has many paintings and sculptures inside.

  • Rue Montagne

I think that Montagne street is one of the two biggest commercial streets in Charleroi. Linking the high city with the low one, it has lots of history, but, we couldn't appreciate it because it was suffering hard work being almost impossible to circulate. There were no works inside H&M so... you know!

  • Dampremy street

One of the older streets in Charleroi, is still beautiful. from it still start the stairs that once led to the castle, and where teh woekers dried their wools. However, the general look is modern, and commerce spreads along it.

  • Sr Christophe church

On Place Charles stands the Basilica of Saint Christophe. It was first built in 1667, enlarged in 1723, and then dedicated to Saint Christopher (initially Siant Louis). In 1956, architect Joseph André renovated the whole church and only the chancel remains from the original.

  • Bourse Passage

Open in 1893 in the location of an old convent, this commercial structure has the the typical look of the "Belle Époque", in a Neo-classical style using stone and iron. The shops still show the original wooden doors. Fortunately, they were closed when we passed, and we could proceed...

Charleroi Restaurants

  • Reasonably cheap

We all had fish, and though the slices of fish were small, it was tasty and... not pricey. The service was kind, quick, and generally it was considered positive by everybody, without any special mention.

  • Belgian food

One of the most known restaurants in the centre of Charleroi. The kitchen is based on Belgian specialties. The food is tasty and portions are ok. Friendly service and average price. I liked the desert "crème de spéculoos".The grilled steak is tasty too.

  • best French fries of Charleroi!

Ok, you might wonder why I put some "French fries" place under a restaurant tip. Simply, because "Robert la Frite", is a monument, it's an institute! Every self-respecting inhabitant of Charleroi knows this place and if you happen to be in Charleroi, then you can't miss out on the French fries here! This is actually the ritual of every young person...

  • A great typical Belgian Bar !

It's a welcoming typical Belgian bar where you could find and taste a large range of Belgian beers. This bar is very well situated in the city center near the City hall (and belfry) and the St. Chritspher Church which are two well-known places to visit. I really advice you to discover it if you have the opportunity !

It's the only Irish pub in the area of Charleroi but it's a place to discover if you go to Charleroi ! Some Irish products to discover, live music during the weekend, a celtic atmosphere everytime... It's a great place where you could have fun during weekends' evening.

  • spend a nice evening!

This is actually the only place in which I like to have a drink in Charleroi. One of the few places in which you are not disturbed by some "losers" thinking that they might have a chance with you.:-)Music can be quite (too) loud, but the best time to come is when almost everyone left the pub, and they start playing genuine Irish songs. On Friday...

  • AVOID Airportways Shuttle

Avoid Airportways Shuttle Service at all cost. I have used them three times, and never ever again! The first time the van was old, dirty and rattled so loudly we could hardly hear each other speak. The second the driver got lost in country lanes, where he should never have been in the first place, and the third time they had still not shown up to...

Charleroi Shopping

  • "An enjoyable place to have a good time...

I regularly go to this Shopping center. There a lot a shops where you can find a very large range of women's and men's clothes of different brands. You can also find bookshops and shops of house furnishing. There're also some sympathetic bars, restaurants (Greek, Italian, ...) and fast-food (Quick, Pizza Hut, ...) where you can spend some time....

  • Galeries de la bourse

In this great old shopping arcade there is not a great deal to buy - except books! They have a fabulous second hand bookstore in here which is packed to the gills with BD. In industrial charleroi, these 'galeries' are quite clean and inviting. To be found in Charleroi Sud.

  • Comics Books

Belgium is known for its absurd culture and odd sense of humour. But in the world of comic books, Belgium is one of the top producers of comic books, with two competing “schools” - the Charleroi School and Brussels School. The Charleroi School, based in Marcinelle, was home to the publisher Dupuis, who published Le Journal de Spirou. I remember...

Charleroi Warnings and Dangers

  • Airport Police

I work at the airport of Charleroi, but that doesn't give me any advantages, apparently. I was parking where I couldn't park (ok, my fault), and instead of a fine, the airport police put a sticker on my car window, so I could hardly see anything anymore. I couldn't get it off and had to drive home like this. Not very safe, is it ? And imagine the...

  • Charleroi is renowned...

OKAY...Charleroi is renowned throughout Belgium as the most violent and dangerous of its cities, and it does live up to it. Generally the atmosphere is cool, and has a rough charm that you come to recognise, but the streets tend not to be lit at night sometimes and there are plenty of people lurking about. However, in June 2000 Charleroi of all...

  • Watch your car!

Regarding crime, Charleroi is often called the "Chicago of Belgium". Maybe it's a bit exaggerated, it's very unlikely that you'll get killed during your stay! ;-)The major problem is car jacking and damaged cars. During daytime you'll be ok, but at evening or nighttime, please park your car on a safe spot. Dark alleys aren't really an option here....

  • Maison Dorée

  • Fine Arts Palace

Don't be mislead by the name, and the statue in front of it - "Beaux Arts Palace", in the same name's place, is no more than a concert hall. This seems to be a rare situation, where the palace gave name to building and not the opposite, as usual.

  • Justice Palace

My map of Charleroi indicated close to the Justice Palace, as highlight, two famous lions - Tutur and Totor. I spent some time around the palace, searching for them, and... couldn't find. Traditionally a poor town, Charleroi nonetheless has quite a good sporting credence. One night in town I met a large group of people from England (I couldn't believe it, why would they come here?) who were taking part in the boating tournament just outside town. I never went to watch but it sounds very popular. Then you have the cycling - the...
