This place is the real deal! Filled to the brim with local character and presided over by a charming matronesse: Madame Marie. It was so enjoyable to sit here and peak out at the passerbys. Even more entertaining was the very verbal, semi-invalid couple that were celebrating their anniversary.
Favorite Dish: Anything alcoholic since it is strictlty a bar.

This place offers ungoing service as a true brasserie should. Very laid back in feel and filled with locals. I had a respectable chicken salad. Plenty of locals abound. I guess they, too, enjoy the front row seat to the attractive Grand Place of Tournai.

As a member of VT, i can give my impressions about several and different tips on visiting a city.
I visited two pubs/resto's on the beautiful market place of Tournai. "The Amphi" is terribble and unfriendly. I wanted a touristic menu but the waiter told me, after 15 minutes waiting, in French, that he had no time to serve tourist on the terrace.
The taverne "l'Ecu de France" is friendly and the waiters do their best to speak flemish.
Favorite Dish: Just the local dish at an average price of 20 euro enjoying the environment of the great, wide market place.
The resto/bistro "La Marmite", also near the Grand Place, seems to me a quit cosy place to have a break. (see the menu - picture 3) But no tables available.

This restaurant replaced recently (2003, 2004?) an old pub and this is a great improvement!!
Even if you can pass in front of it without noticing it (I did it several time!!), make sure to book your table in advance, the place is quite popular...
This is French cuisine. The quality of the food is very good and it is prepared with research. The service is friendly but done without too much 'manners' (which is not specially a bad point).
The portions are really huge: if you take a starter and a main dish, you won't probably be able to order a desert!
This is open from Wednesday till Saturday and on Sunday but then only for lunch time.
Favorite Dish: i had a risotto with liver as a starter and une araignee de boeuf (specific part of beef - don't know how to translate) as a main dish...

Favorite Dish: We took some first plate typique Turkish, they were really tasty and original. Then we took one pizza each (it was way too much) but they were so delicious!
I took the scampi one, miam miam!
The prices are good for what you get.

Open everyday from 10am and serving food up to 10pm, this new restaurant will probably be very successful...
Relaxed atmosphere, good service, good food, everything we could wish!
Favorite Dish: From various salads up to more gastronomic dishes (such as "escalope de foie gras") or simply pasta, you'll probably find something at your taste in the menu.
I personally had "une salade perigourdine", simply delicious!

Well, everybody who attended the VT-meeting shall probably have the same restaurant tip :-)
I really liked this nice little restaurant. It has a cosy atmosphere and interior. The food is very tasteful. I had salmon with a fresh herb sauce, absolutely yummie!
The service is good as well.
And don't ask how we did it, but after we split the bill and everybody paid, we found ourselves with 18 euro over!!! Now, that's what makes the restaurant extra special of course :-)

If I had to recommend a single restaurant in Tournai, that would be the one...
It is located in the ancient stables of a nearby hotel that has now disappeared.
The choice is not very large, the food is simple but delicious.

Pretty popular restaurant, you'd better book it in advance. Nothing fancy inside, even more the huge artificial plant even looks pretty disgusting. The service is not particularly friendly.
Now what's the reason of its success? Well, simply the food, if you appreciate good meat, this is the place to go when you are in the area.
Even better, this is not really expensive: about 12 Euros for a huge piece of meat and the bottle of wine is starting around 10E

I wouldn't specially recommend the place, last time I have been there the service was awful !! We had to wait 20min just to have a beer...
This is indeed a brasserie where you could either have food or simply beer. True that they propose some beers but nothing exceptionnal.
Indeed if I mention the place this is mainly for the house, a nice gothic house from the 14th century
