Walk up the 406 steps of the Montagne de Bueren

From the bottom, the 406 steps of the Montagne de Bueren are an awesome sight. The view from the bottom is exceeded, though, by the fantastic panoramic view over the city of Liège that one has at the top.

According to legend, 600 Franchimontese soldiers climbed up the hill in 1468 to take the camp of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. They were lead by the Liège patriot, Bueren, who wanted to encourage his fellow citizens to take up arms against Charles the Bold who had taken the city. The whole plan failed, the 600 Franchimontese were killed, and the city was plundered for 7 weeks. In fact, though, that unfortunate event took place on another hill of the city. The Montagne de Bueren staircase was actually only built in 1880 to allow the soldiers of the garrison on top of the hill to go down to the center without having to pass through the dangerous little alleys in the vicinity.

Whatever the history, climbing the 406 steps of the Montagne de Bueren was one of the highlights of my visit to Liège. It is a long walk, and I was breathing hard by the time that I reached the top. Amazingly, I saw some people emerge from a door near the top. If they make that climb every time they come and go from their home, they must be in great physical condition!

If you get tired along the way, there are a few benches on which to rest. There is also a handrail in the middle that you can use to steady yourself, if needed.

    Visit the Place Saint Lambert
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Place Saint Lambert is the central hub of Liège. It is an extremely busy place that is crowded with people. There are also many buses coming and going.

This location derives its name from Saint Lambert, the bishop of Maastricht, who was murdered in Liège in 705 A.D. Saint Lambert was famous for preaching the Christian faith to the pagans of the area, despite danger and threats. His life ended violently, which some biographers attribute to his reproof of King Pepin for adultery with his sister-in-law Alpais, mother of Charles Martel.

See Le Perron (the Perron Fountain)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Perron Fountain in the center city market place is an important monument. It is a symbol of freedom for the Province of Liège. The original Perron had been demolished by Charles the Bold of Burgundy. Mary of Burgundy, however, had it reconstructed. The present Perron, designed in 1697 by Jean Delcour, consists of a octagonal fountain with arcades in which a column, carried by four lions, supports the Three Graces who carry a pine cone.

See the Palais de Justice (Palace of Justice)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The most impressive building surrounding the Place Saint Lambert is the Palais de Justice (Palace of Justice). The Palace was constructed in the 16th century with a mixing of styles like the Italian Reinassance outside, the Gothic inside and, in the inner square, one can see the transition from late-Gothic to early Reinassance. It used to be the Palace of the Prince – Bishops of Liège.

Visit the Maison Du Tourisme (Tourist Center)
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Place Saint Lambert, there is a small tourist center. I visited the center to obtain some information about the city -- and I was surprised that the personnel only spoke minimal English. Previously, I had stopped at the small tourist office in the Liège-Guillemins train station. There, the employee knew practically no English. Apparently, the city of Liège does not get a large number of English-speaking tourists.

If you know the French language, then you will have no problem. Unfortunately, my knowledge of the French language is minimal.

    See the Small Plane
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Place Saint Lambert, there have been many small planes. The first one landed on the square in 1927, the year when Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic. Models of more or less realistic painted steel sheets, they were put up by photographers to attract passers-by (above all children) who wanted to keep a souvenir of Liège. The last one disappeared in 1963. Since 1996, Place Saint Lambert has housed a bigger and more solid small plane. 'Tchantchès et Nanesse', characters of Liège's folklore, have already taken their seat on the small plane. In Liège, it is common for children to join these characters in the plane for souvenir photos.

    Museum of modern arts
  • Tip Rating:
  • The museum is far from the touristic center. But you can take the bus 26 or 31 that leaves from the Theater place.
It doesn't cost a lot. There is nice collection of belgian modern and contemporan paintings. But don't look over the toilets, it is really old, they don't have a lot of money because they depend on the City administration.

    The Palace of the Princes-bishops
  • Tip Rating:
  • The place from where the city and its principality was ruled for centuries, since the X century to the French revolution, when it became a part of France and then of the Netherlands, until 1830, when Belgium became independent. The main facade is a reconstruction of the original, that was lost after a fire.

The building hosts nowadays the government of the province of Liege and the Court of Justice.

    The Saint Bartholomew Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • This church was built by the successor of Bishop Notger
The choir dates from the 11th century, the transepts and the nave are from the 12th century.
The Western façade in typical Mosan style (the style from the cities situated alongside the river Meuse) was constructed at the end of the 12th century.
The church is absolutely worth a visit
