Liège has a few interesting churches, such as the 11-12th-century-twin-towered St Bartholomew, the 15th-century-St Martin, the 16th-century-St Paul's Cathedral, which replaced St Lambert as the city's cathedral in 1801, and St James's Church.

The cathedral was founded in the 10th century but rebuilt from the 13th until the 15th century.
The entrance is on the north side. And when you go inside, you can admire a lot of art treasures, such as: the ceiling frescoes from the 16th century, ivory artifacts from the 11th century, the golden relic-shrine of St Lambert and the marble sculpture of Christ in his grave made by Delcour in 1696.
Opening hours:
Mon-Sun. 8-12a.m. and 4-5p.m.

The Perron is the symbol of the city. It in fact represents the Province of Liège and the city freedom.
The original Perron has been demolished by Charles the Bold of Burgundy, but Mary of Burgundy had it reconstructed.
The present Perron was designed in 1697 by Jean Delcour.

Liege cathedral was built in the 10th century, but underwent numerous renovations until the 15th century. In general its style can be called gothic. When visiting the interior have a look at the wooden pulpit, which is a masterpiece of joinery.

We were tempted in by a Tour de France-related exhibition on the science of the bicycle, and were glad we visited this small museum. Many of the exhibits are aimed at children, but we adults found plenty to look at too. The staff were friendly and helpful, only too happy to carry out one of the demonstrations for us (a *truly* hair-raising demonstration of static electricity). Another favourite was the display of optical illusions.

None of the guides seem to agree on the exact number of steps it takes to reach the top of the Montagne de Bueren, and I was too breathless to keep count! However, there are certainly over 400, so it's unsurprising that the view from the top is amazing. If you can bear a few more steps, there is a viewpoint from the war memorial at the top.
The steps up the mountain were built for an army barracks at its summit. Accounts of exactly why vary, from allowing marching and preventing ambushes in the narrow streets, to providing a route away from the temptations of the red light district. However, perhaps the biggest puzzle is how people manage to get their shopping to the homes halfway up!

Although its facade has been renovated, the lack of funds did not allow the works of restoration of the interior to continue. For this reason, no visits are possible. However, it is in the quartier Hors-Chateau, one of the most typical in the city. It gets this name from the fact that it was placed out of the former city walls.
Next to the church, you can visit the museum of the Walloon life, if you are interested in the cultural aspects of Wallonia.

The Royal Opera of Wallonia is the symbol of the cultural splendour that the city reached during its days of prosperity.
It was built during the XIX century as an Italian style opera theater. As a curiosity, the opera was built with the material from two different churches that had been seriously damaged during the French Revolution.
