Coo Waterfalls

A couple of kilometers from Stavelot, you can also admire the "famous" Coo Waterfalls. They are indeed the highest belgian waterfalls, 13meters !!!
They are artificial but don't have any specific purpose except modifying the river flow.

This could lead to some confusion with the nearby hydroelectric example. Indde water is being pumped during the night from the Ambleve river to one of the upper aritificial lake and when there is a strong electricity demand during the day, this water is then released to create electricity.

The abbey church

The remainings of this abbey founded in the 7th century by St Remacle are probably the main tourist attraction of the town.
What's left from the church is this door from the16th century and a couple of ruins.
However you could imagine how big and impressive the church should have been!

The abbey buildings have recently been renovated and are now sheltering three different museums. One of them is dedicated to the History of the nearby F1 circuit.

Gite du Vieux Frene and Gite du Petit Sentier: Welcome to the Waloon farmers, Stavelot

Djinn76 Says:  If you plan to stay in the area with a group of people, this is the perfect and cost-effective kind of accomodation. For small farms, surviving nowadays is quite though, some farmers found this alternative way to earn some more money. In our case, they have divided this big...

Tourist Traps

All the business around the Coo Waterfall is so pathetic. The waterfall itself is relatively impressive but nothing exceptional.
However it is generating many different touristic activities. The karting or the kayak rental could make sense but some other are more discussable.
For example, what is this ski-lift doing there? What about this fake Manneken P!ss where you have to insert coins to see it pee (a real trap btw)?
The worst thing is the souvenir shops, they are really selling anything, nothing related to the local artwork or culture but craps going from the Heavy Metal T-shirt to Egyptian artifacts.

Unique Suggestions: Walk around in the countryside...

Spa-Francorchamps Circuit

Just outside the town you have access to the paddock of the famous Spa-Francorchamps Formula 1 circuit, the most beautiful circuit in the world according to most of the F1 pilots.
This famous competition has almost disappeared because of some weird anti-tobacco law and stupid ecologist politicians. At the end, it is finally back in the F1 calendar...
Several other competitions also take place on the circuit and the area is attracting many car-lovers. While we were strolling in town we have had the chance to see two dozen Morgan arriving together!

The countryisde in the area is wonderful! Walking could be an option but if you want to see more of it, you could also rent a mountain bike (or bring your own one). There are many small roads or paths through the forests to set an itinerary at your taste. However one condition, don’t be afraid of the steep slope!!

Favorite thing: This gate is all that is left of the church , besides this gate you can find the abbey.
It's recently restored and situated the historical museum and the F1 museum.
At the F1 museum you can find a nice collection of cars who raced at the race track in Francorchamp which is a few km from Stavelot.
The information centre is also situated at this building.
On the in court you can find exhumations, be careful it is very dangerous to walk on the old walls!
