The river Meuse saw many people drown after siege by Pavlik_NL Dinant, second important city unde the prince-bishop of Liege, became already under attack when situated far from Liege, it always was left to it's own faith, when the rivaling Bouvignes tried to get rid of it's competitors on the cuprum-craft-market. Namur (Namen), the other town on the Meuse that also has a history of sieges and attacks, belonged to this kingdom and both towns competed in getting destroyed the most (as it almost seems if you follow both town's past). The most hoorific defeath was against the Bourgondians, that besieged Dinant in seven days and then threw 800 citizens, tied up two by two, into the river Meuse (a sport that has been repeated various time afterwards). In the Great War (WW 1) the Germans destroy 3/4 of Dinant and leave it as a ruin. Charles de Gaulle himself got wounded on the bridge in this battle, therefor it bares his name (the bridge, not the battle (-: ) Leave a Comment

Inside the citadelle ... walking on the edges by Pavlik_NL Dinant may have been for many times under siege, a keeping threat is the one of the enormous cliff on which the citadelle is built. This rock has done damage through the ages, by pieces (smaller or larger) coming down upon the houses from time to time. Latest was in 1995, when a piece of the cliff let go and destroyed a few houses. The rock now is supported by many pins that stick deep into the stone. You can see the pins as pimples all over the rock's surface.
Dinant is the fondest memory of Dinant ... the view to this town's centre is just unique! Leave a Comment

Dinant /Belgium by Martinewezel The town is down in the valley and the citadel is upon the rock. To get there you can either take the gondola at the foot of the rock, or park your car upon the rock. For those among you with claustrofobia, there are stairs just next to the cable lift. Same price :-) Leave a Comment

Dinant/ Belgium by Martinewezel The centre of Dinant can be pretty busy and it's not easy to get rid of your car. besides, there are parking meters everywhere. We parked our car on the parking lot upon the rock, and took the gondola down to the centre. 5,50 euro/person, but the entrance to the citadel + guided tour is included. Afterwards we spent a few hours in Dinant. No stress with parking meters and the gondola ride is fun too. Leave a Comment

Couque, Dinant by freya_heaven We walked past this bakers with all these gorgeous looking Couque (biscuits) in the window. All cleverly designed in the shapes of animals, flower baskets, houses etc. The history of these biscuits is centuries old, the people of Dinant did not get on with their neighbours in Bouvignes, the next village. So whenever another dispute erupted they would throw stale bread & cakes at the people of Bouvignes. They then set about actually making harder biscuits to inflict more pain, this tradition has carried on to today, (making them not throwing them!) Leave a Comment

by Mahieu The "Couques de Dinant" are as famous in Dinant as These cookies are made of flour, sugar and honey. They taste good, but be careful when you eat them, they are very very hard! Actually, I think they should come with a warning, in order not to break your teeth on them ;-) As you can see in the picture, they come in all shapes and sizes. Leave a Comment

Adolphe Sax by myriam_c This is not a general tip but there is no other category to give this information. Adolphe Sax is the inventor of the saxophone and he was born in Dinant in 1814. I found his statue in the shopping street in front of a ... saxophone shop! Leave a Comment

Take a boat ride on the Meuse, gives you some fantastic view points of the town and the Citadel. (Don't get on the first boat you see - as they charge different prices! (from 5€ - 8€) Leave a Comment
