Favorite thing: Walking and sightseeing around the city and the surrounding area is the cheapest and easiest way to experience Dinant, depending how long you could walk though ;)
So, plan your walk carefully so you don't spend a lot of time only to find out where you are and how to get to your destination. There is a map in the tourist information office for comprehensive walking plan, but this is not free unfortunately. But if you don't want to pay a dime, you could get a free map (only the inner city) in the office. With this, you could go to all the places of interest by your own easily, especially if you don't speak french at all..
Will add pics later!

Favorite thing: Due to its strategic location on the Meuse Valley, Dinant has had a tormented history of sieges, sackages, pillages, and destruction. The entire city has been destroyed and rebuilt several times and there are therefore not many historical buildings left. But the beauty of Dinant is in its wonderful location in the narrow flatland between the river and the cliffs.
Of course, not everything has been tragic in the history of Dinant. This is also the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Today, one of the town's main streets, where his birthplace is located, parallel to the river, is named in his honour.

Favorite thing: The centre of Dinant can be pretty busy and it's not easy to get rid of your car.
besides, there are parking meters everywhere.
We parked our car on the parking lot upon the rock, and took the gondola down to the centre. 5,50 euro/person, but the entrance to the citadel + guided tour is included. Afterwards we spent a few hours in Dinant. No stress with parking meters and the gondola ride is fun too.

Favorite thing: The town is down in the valley and the citadel is upon the rock. To get there you can either take the gondola at the foot of the rock, or park your car upon the rock.
For those among you with claustrofobia, there are stairs just next to the cable lift. Same price :-)

Fondest memory: We walked past this bakers with all these gorgeous looking Couque (biscuits) in the window. All cleverly designed in the shapes of animals, flower baskets, houses etc.
The history of these biscuits is centuries old, the people of Dinant did not get on with their neighbours in Bouvignes, the next village. So whenever another dispute erupted they would throw stale bread & cakes at the people of Bouvignes. They then set about actually making harder biscuits to inflict more pain, this tradition has carried on to today, (making them not throwing them!)

Favorite thing: You can visit the fortress by cable cabin or you can climb the 408 steps!!
At 100 metres height you have a beautiful panorama at the river Maas.
Between the walls of the fortress you see life-size figures who show you the highlight of the European ant Belgium history.
You can have a look at the prison, the kitchen and coach house.
During the season it's open from 10.00 till 18.00
outside the season from 10.00 till 16.00
from October till March closed on Friday

Favorite thing: The church is build in 934. In 1228 there was tragical damage at the church cause by a move of a rock above the church, 36 people where killed.
The church is rebuild after the damage in mesh gothic style.
Don't forget to have a look at the font build in 1472.
At the church you can find the largest glass window from Europe, showing scenes from the bible.
Open every day from 10.00 till 18.00

Favorite thing: The "Couques de Dinant" are as famous in Dinant as These cookies are made of flour, sugar and honey. They taste good, but be careful when you eat them, they are very very hard! Actually, I think they should come with a warning, in order not to break your teeth on them ;-)
As you can see in the picture, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Favorite thing: Dinant may have been for many times under siege, a keeping threat is the one of the enormous cliff on which the citadelle is built. This rock has done damage through the ages, by pieces (smaller or larger) coming down upon the houses from time to time. Latest was in 1995, when a piece of the cliff let go and destroyed a few houses. The rock now is supported by many pins that stick deep into the stone. You can see the pins as pimples all over the rock's surface.
Fondest memory: Dinant is the fondest memory of Dinant ... the view to this town's centre is just unique!
