    Antwerp Zoo

by Martman Updated Oct 11, 2005

Favorite thing: I visited Antwerp many years ago, so do not remember much. (This would be true with ANY city I visited so long ago.) I do remember visiting the zoo and had a wonderful day there. I do remember the zoo is adjacent to the train station. This is helpful for locating the place.

    Foster parents at the zoo...

    'Laurito'

Favorite thing: There are many species of vultures.
You'll find them beautiful or not. The species I
like most are 'monniksgieren'. They are a
species that also find their roots in the south
    of France.

A special story I want to ad is about the old
couple in the Antwerp zoo. They didn't had
    offspring for a long time.

'BUT' they make excellent foster parents.
When the couple of vultures in 'Planckendael'
didn't raised up their kid like they were
supposed to do , the kid was brought to
Antwerp , 35 km north to see if these two
would accept 'Icarus'. We are talking 1997.
You have to know that these vultures return to
nature , but it is important that they are raised
by other vultures. The Antwerp foster parents
did an excellent job. So 'Romane'
came to Antwerp , that one was born in
    Villers-les-Dombes. Both of them got
    released in France , Causse.
A few feathers get bleached so they can
recognize them from the ground if these
    magnificient animals fly.

This year a little drama happened in Spain ,
in Huelva , a wild nest got disturbed...so the
egg was transported to Guadalintin(Spain) ,
and kept warm by a machine. On 11 may
    2004'Laurito' got adopted in Antwerp.
The kid will find it's freedom in France ,
Baronnies ofter a stay with the foster parent
for about 11 till 15 weeks.

    Isn't that a remarcable story?

Don't miss the Antwerp Zoo! Don't miss my Tlogues!

    Zoo Antwerp

Favorite thing: The most beautiful park in Antwerp is undeniable the Antwerp Zoo.
Have a look in my T'logues about the zoo.

Fondest memory: You can go just for the animals, you can go for the art, you can also visit behind the cages and see how the zoo is actually working. This last visit is only during winter time and with an official guide.

    Walk through the little zoo

Fondest memory: As I reviewed my photos from this leg of the hitchhiking trip, I could only find some from the zoo. So, with apologies to natives from Antwerp, this is all I can show from my visit (which was only a day and a night).

The zoo wasn't particularly grand. It was just right-sized for an hour or two stroll around. This first photo shows a black bear, sitting in his pen with his tongue out. That's all he did while we looked at him. Wacko.

Fondest memory: Going to the Zoo in Antwerp when I was a kid and seeing the flamingoes. The Zoo is right next to the main railway station, which in itself is one of the most impressive architectural realizations I have ever seen. And the station has been restored to its original state in the past few years. Definitely worth having a look.
