In 2004 the tallships race was back in Antwerp again. It was one of the great events this summer. Lot of activity is going on, when the tall ships are here. The event will be back in tge summer of 2006.
The city of Antwerp organises fireworks at the river Schelde on New Years Eve. We saw the display during the first 20 minutes of 2005 together with 50.000 other people.
The entrance free, take your own champagne and enjoy !
FIREWORKS : every year , 12 o'clock
thousands of people come to see the
firework in Antwerp. It is lightened from a ship
on the river 'Schelde'.
The firework can been seen best from
the 'zuiderterras' and the 'noorderterras'...lots
of colors , quit spectacular.
We enjoyed it in front of 'het steen' the castle.
And just on the right moment we popped a
magnum bottle of champaign.
Maybe you would like to join us next year?
(it's free....so a real budget travel tip. :-)))

Every year the last three weeks of the year
and the first of the new year the city council
provides a skating piste on the 'grote markt'
in front of the city hall.
For a really small price you can rent ice skates
and enjoy some sportive action in one of the
most beautiful decors in the world.
Strictly spoken it is not in Antwerp , but
in Borgerhout. Borgerhout is connected to
Antwerp and the borders are invisible. You
can easely walk from the 'astridplein' right
into the heart of Borgerhout.
Every year the 'Reuzenommegang'
takes place. An event were all the giants from
all over the country come and make a large
parade. Of course accompanied by dancing
girls and boys and fanfares from all over the
country as well.
The ones from Borgerhout are the most
special ones. They are dancing giants. They
are not high at all , they are 'dwarf
You can easely kiss them on the cheek. The
thing is , they got quit a huge head , large
'2004 it was edition 292' and the last
time the original Borgerhoutse giants went out.
'Reus , Reuzin , Kinnebaba and Dolfijn' will
retire next year. They got new clothes
this year and they will go to the museum in
the 'districtshuis'. Next year the new
generation will be in the cortege.
If your going , they always make a stop in
the Roma. The Roma is an old renovated
cinema by a lot of volunteering hands.
This procession of the giant is a

' THE SUMMER OF ANTWERP'
is an annual returning festival.
Waiting for the next edition It contains circuses ,
theater , films in open air , night of the
Don't bother to try to reservate the
performances like circusses. Because they
are always sold out long before the summer
starts. But I can recommand just a few things
that even are for free....

I like to see this sort of things.
These are people that have a special hobby
or interest. They read a lot of books about a
certain period , get in touch with
specialist...and then go looking for items.
They make them themselves or buy then in
specialized stores. (the shoes are made in
And then they gather together to do a
historical reconstruction. First weekend of
june , an international social gathering took
place in the 'rivierenhof'
A huge parc on the border of Antwerp in
Deurne. 600 people came together to
reconstruct a specific period in time.
A midieval war between the 'Antwerpenaars'
and the 'Bourgondiërs'. For that occasion
they set up a camp.
They demonstrate their craftmansship and
also a lot of items are sold. You can see they
got a lot of attention for details.
(we didn't found the place at first , because
the location was changed - the newly sowed
gass wouldn't have survived a war , we only
found the place when the war was almost
over , by hearing the cannon shots.)
If your interested , have a look at this website!.
The first weekend of June , sunday , in the
'Kattendijkdok' there is a lot of activity.
You know 'Pananmarenko' is probably
the best known modern art artist with
Antwerp-roots. He invents all sorts of
imaginative flying things.
That day a lot of people become a little bit like
Panamarenko. The task of the competion is
to fly as far as possible with a home-made
flying thing. Their 'flight' all ends in the water.
Unbelieveble what people create and how
inventive they are. Some fly , some fall and
some do something in between. ;-)
The sun was shining , everybody gathered
around the water and waited for their favorite
fly-thing. An ice-cream , some drinks...
The nicest fair in belgium. This fair atracts
every year around 1,5 million people.
We have got a good tradition of good living.
Amusement is the last thing we try to nibble
out of our budget.
For 5 weeks long this place is turned into
one of the most vivid places in belgium...
It is in a nice neighboorhood and the
compact setting of the fair makes it one of the
most sociable , friendly , comfortable fairs in
LOCATION - vlaamse kaai and waalse kaai

Have a look on the official website!.
Normally ' the Ascension day' is near
the end of may. And a good tradition in
Antwerp is the little 'free' festival the
day before this Christian Holiday .
From noon Belgian well known and less well
know singers and groups come to fill the
'groenplaats' with a lot of atmosphere.
Of course the main reason is to get funds for
further actions. You can support them by
buying a sticker or have some drinks.
In Belgium there are always a lot of tents
where they sell goodies when a festival takes
place and a lot of food stalls. And for some
strange reason they always got the weather
by their side the last couple of years.
(The groenplaats is a place where a lot of
public traffic stops under , on the square and
Since a couple of years Pole Pole is becoming one of the better known Summer festivals. Not only in Antwerp, it happens on several locations (e.b. Gent).
In Antwerp such festivals are mostly held at left bank.
The Coca Cola company seemed to have found it important enough to sponsor `-)
On August 15th 2004 the second edition of Navigaytion took place in Antwerp. Navigaytion is the biggest event for gays and lesbians (straight people are also very welcome) in Belgium. Its a huge dance party on the water, with party boats, drag queens, etc. 15.000 people were having a party. It takes place at the Willemdok yacht harbour. Next edition August 2005.
One of the biggest fairs in Belgium. Every year for at least five weeks and sometimes six weeks. More than 1,5 million people visit the fair. Its very lively.
The 2005 edition will be from 14 May until 19 June and maybe there will be one extra week added. It takes place at de Vlaamse en Waalse kaai
June 2004 the second Red Bull Flugtag was organised in Antwerp. The weather was very nice. The flugtag is about people we have made thier own flying machine and they have to stay in the air as long as possible. Its great fun!!! It takes place at the kattendijkdok.
In the summer large number of cruises start arriving in Antwerp, during our city when the first cruise arrived it was a sight of jubilations for locals. The cruise was welcome very warmly by them, people chanting welcome and weaving hands.
