    The tallships

    In 2004 the tallships race was back in Antwerp again. It was one of the great events this summer. Lot of activity is going on, when the tall ships are here. The event will be back in tge summer of 2006.

    Fireworks at NYE, Antwerp

    The city of Antwerp organises fireworks at the river Schelde on New Years Eve. We saw the display during the first 20 minutes of 2005 together with 50.000 other people.
    The entrance free, take your own champagne and enjoy !

    FIREWORKS : every year , 12 o'clock
    thousands of people come to see the
    firework in Antwerp. It is lightened from a ship
    on the river 'Schelde'.

    The firework can been seen best from
    the 'zuiderterras' and the 'noorderterras'...lots
    of colors , quit spectacular.

    We enjoyed it in front of 'het steen' the castle.
    And just on the right moment we popped a
    magnum bottle of champaign.

    Maybe you would like to join us next year?

    Antwerp on ICE

    Every year the last three weeks of the year
    and the first of the new year the city council
    provides a skating piste on the 'grote markt'
    in front of the city hall.

    For a really small price you can rent ice skates
    and enjoy some sportive action in one of the
    most beautiful decors in the world.

    Giants

    Strictly spoken it is not in Antwerp , but
    in Borgerhout. Borgerhout is connected to
    Antwerp and the borders are invisible. You
    can easely walk from the 'astridplein' right
    into the heart of Borgerhout.

    Every year the 'Reuzenommegang'
    takes place. An event were all the giants from
    all over the country come and make a large
    parade. Of course accompanied by dancing
    girls and boys and fanfares from all over the
    country as well.

    The ones from Borgerhout are the most
    special ones. They are dancing giants. They
    are not high at all , they are 'dwarf
    giants.'
    You can easely kiss them on the cheek. The
    thing is , they got quit a huge head , large
    sholders.

    '2004 it was edition 292' and the last
    time the original Borgerhoutse giants went out.
    'Reus , Reuzin , Kinnebaba and Dolfijn' will
    retire next year. They got new clothes
    this year and they will go to the museum in
    the 'districtshuis'. Next year the new
    generation will be in the cortege.

    If your going , they always make a stop in
    the Roma. The Roma is an old renovated
    cinema by a lot of volunteering hands.

    This procession of the giant is a
    must when
    you are in town.

    a great festival...

    ' THE SUMMER OF ANTWERP'
    is an annual returning festival.


    Waiting for the next edition It contains circuses ,
    theater , films in open air , night of the
    museums....

    Don't bother to try to reservate the
    performances like circusses. Because they
    are always sold out long before the summer
    starts. But I can recommand just a few things
    that even are for free....

    ------------------------MUSIC ON THE SQUARES----------------------
    -----------------------THE MERRY GO ROUND--------------------------

    This is the most beautifull and exceptionell
    carroussel worldwide. Believe me. Not only
    for children , just to go and see as an adult
    as well.

    Tickets cost 0,5o euro

    The war

    I like to see this sort of things.
    These are people that have a special hobby
    or interest. They read a lot of books about a
    certain period , get in touch with
    specialist...and then go looking for items.
    They make them themselves or buy then in
    specialized stores. (the shoes are made in
    England)

    And then they gather together to do a
    historical reconstruction. First weekend of
    june , an international social gathering took
    place in the 'rivierenhof'
    A huge parc on the border of Antwerp in
    Deurne. 600 people came together to
    reconstruct a specific period in time.
    A midieval war between the 'Antwerpenaars'
    and the 'Bourgondiƫrs'. For that occasion
    they set up a camp.

    They demonstrate their craftmansship and
    also a lot of items are sold.You can see they
    got a lot of attention for details.


    (we didn't found the place at first , because
    the location was changed - the newly sowed
    gass wouldn't have survived a war , we only
    found the place when the war was almost
    over , by hearing the cannon shots.)

    Red Bull flugtag - JUNE

    The first weekend of June , sunday , in the
    'Kattendijkdok' there is a lot of activity.
    You know 'Pananmarenko' is probably
    the best known modern art artist with
    Antwerp-roots. He invents all sorts of
    imaginative flying things.

    That day a lot of people become a little bit like
    Panamarenko. The task of the competion is
    to fly as far as possible with a home-made
    flying thing. Their 'flight' all ends in the water.

    Unbelieveble what people create and how
    inventive they are. Some fly , some fall and
    some do something in between. ;-)

    The sun was shining , everybody gathered
    around the water and waited for their favorite
    fly-thing. An ice-cream , some drinks...

    The nicest fair in belgium. This fair atracts
    every year around 1,5 million people.
    We have got a good tradition of good living.
    Amusement is the last thing we try to nibble
    out of our budget.

    For 5 weeks long this place is turned into
    one of the most vivid places in belgium...
    It is in a nice neighboorhood and the
    compact setting of the fair makes it one of the
    most sociable , friendly , comfortable fairs in
    belgium...

    LOCATION - vlaamse kaai and waalse kaai
    not far from the museum of fine arts , modern
    art , ....

    WHEN - sinksen is a local christian festivity -
    (watch the advertisement boards all over town.)
    from that day on , five weeks long.

    Normally ' the Ascension day' is near
    the end of may. And a good tradition in
    Antwerp is the little 'free' festival the
    day before this Christian Holiday .

    From noon Belgian well known and less well
    know singers and groups come to fill the
    'groenplaats' with a lot of atmosphere.

    Of course the main reason is to get funds for
    further actions. You can support them by
    buying a sticker or have some drinks.

    In Belgium there are always a lot of tents
    where they sell goodies when a festival takes
    place and a lot of food stalls. And for some
    strange reason they always got the weather
    by their side the last couple of years.

    (The groenplaats is a place where a lot of
    public traffic stops under , on the square and
    nearby. )

    Pole Pole canned :)

    Since a couple of years Pole Pole is becoming one of the better known Summer festivals. Not only in Antwerp, it happens on several locations (e.b. Gent).
    In Antwerp such festivals are mostly held at left bank.

    The Coca Cola company seemed to have found it important enough to sponsor `-)

    Navigaytion

    On August 15th 2004 the second edition of Navigaytion took place in Antwerp. Navigaytion is the biggest event for gays and lesbians (straight people are also very welcome) in Belgium. Its a huge dance party on the water, with party boats, drag queens, etc. 15.000 people were having a party. It takes place at the Willemdok yacht harbour. Next edition August 2005.

    One of the biggest fairs in Belgium. Every year for at least five weeks and sometimes six weeks. More than 1,5 million people visit the fair. Its very lively.
    The 2005 edition will be from 14 May until 19 June and maybe there will be one extra week added. It takes place at de Vlaamse en Waalse kaai

    Red Bull Flugtag

    June 2004 the second Red Bull Flugtag was organised in Antwerp. The weather was very nice. The flugtag is about people we have made thier own flying machine and they have to stay in the air as long as possible. Its great fun!!! It takes place at the kattendijkdok.

    In the summer large number of cruises start arriving in Antwerp, during our city when the first cruise arrived it was a sight of jubilations for locals. The cruise was welcome very warmly by them, people chanting welcome and weaving hands.
