The "real" Vogeltjes markt (or birds market) is held on each Sunday from 8AM to 1PM at the Graanmarkt near the local theater.

You will find birds, chicken, ducks, rabbits and other animals for sale here.

Exotic Market: Exotic Market on Saturday

This is a fun place. I used to go there all the time to buy my foodsupplies. But now I work on Saturdays. I sometimes still go when i can bring myself to get up early. You find here a lot off good stuff .There is a man who makes and sells frech pasta with all kinds of tastes. A goatfarmer has excellent goatcheese with you should taste. A Marocan family who has the best olives and sweets. An italian man selling parmaham and salami. And usually ended my shopping by buying a Vietnamese springroll.
It's a colorfull place where all kinds off cultures mix in perfectly. I think because of this I like it a lot. You don't need to buy anything to have fun here. Or maybe it just can be me, I have something with Markets. I Think it always reflects a bit of how people live, eat,... in that certain city. Well anyway... Try it for yourself.

    Market hours: 7:00 - 16.00

What to buy: Olives, vegtables, cheese, flowers, fresh pasta, herbs, fish,.....

Vogelmarkt: The one and only Vogelmarkt

Being born and bred in Antwerp, I get peed off every time I hear someone saying 'vogeltjesmarkt'. This is the name the hordes of Dutch tourists gave to the best loved market in Antwerp. So, please do not offend the locals, use the right name.
The market dates back from medieval times and it is situated between the most popular shopping streets, close to the Meir for inexpensive trendy clothes and the Huidevettersstraat for designer stuff.

What to buy: Best day to shop here is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 16 p.m. It is not as crowded as a on Sunday and far more interesting. It's the best day to buy Italian deli, Morrocon bread and olives, Dutch cheeses, French savouries, Belgian fruit and veg and lovely flowers. For Fresh, delicious pasta and pesto, visit the Pastaman at the start of the market (coming from the Meir). There are also a few interesting clothes stalls.
Contrary to what people say, you CANNOT buy live animals on the market itself, there are a few shops around the market selling pets and petfood, but in my eyes these are very sad places indeed

    Markets: The Bird´s Market

    by Pieter11 Written Jan 31, 2005

The most famous market of Antwerp is the Vogelenmarkt (Birds Market). It is also the most famous market of Belgium. Every sundaymorning (08.00 – 13.00) thousands of people slowly walk to see the most bizar stalls, that really sell everything you think of.

The name Vogelenmarkt has its origin in the 16th century, when there allready were being sold ducks, gooses and other birds. This tradition expanded and nowdays also rabbits, mouses, dogs, cats, guineapigs, rats, fish, and so on are sold here.

Don´t buy your animals here. Often they are sick or as a famous story tell you, they are not even real: you can think you have bought a beautiful exotic bird, and when you come home is turns out to be a painted sparrow.

    Markets: Vogeltjesmarkt

In the old days this used to be a market where you bought birds (the name means birdmarket), or other animals. But the animals were not always treated right and there are less and less animal sellers now.

We did find this great butcher though, the belgian meat is delicious.
