Antwerp is the only city in Belgium which has a recognised "Chinatown". This is basically a single street, Van Wesenbeke, on the other side of the Astrid Square from Antwerpen Central railway station.
Unfortunately this visit I only had time for an early-ish morning wander before things had really woken up but judging by the number of authentic-looking shops and markets I imagine a proper visit would be well worth while.
It didn't seem to be too tourist-orientated and everything looked suitable chaotic with unpacked boxes of exotic fruits and vegetables used as displays in the shop frontages and some great smells emanating throughout the street.
Definitely on my list when I have a proper revisit!
UPDATE 28th October 2013 - Not quite a proper revisit but had time for a quick, and DELISH! lunch - Bai Wei
Antwerp's China town is only small compared to other major cities, never the less it is the only recognisable China Town in Belgium. There are many fine Asian restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries and medical specialists along its one main street. Two Lions at the end of the street protect China Town and at the other end is a huge Oriental Gate which unfortunately had scaffolding over it at my time of visit.
The area is in a good central location close to the Central train station,Zoo and Diamond district.
Van wezenbekestraat' is best known
in Antwerp as chinatown. There is community
of chinese people living in this small street
bringing along some chinese and asian
supermarkets and a lot of chinese restaurants.
The city council has put white marble lions at
both sides of the street and added some
dragon lanterns to underscore the character
of this street.
It it is chinese new year or if some local
festivities take place it is most definitely
worth to pass by here and to sniff some
Like any other big city, Antwerp also has its own China Town. Its not that really big but surely it exits with its own style giving the real China Town look. The main entrance has two statues of lions and further up many restaurants and other shops.
