    De Zwarte Panter
    by filipdebont
Nowadays the Zwarte Panter (the Black Panther) is an art gallery.

But in fact it was the former St Julianus gasthuis (St Julian's Hospital). This was one of the oldest charity houses of Antwerpen. It was founded in 1303.

Poor people without a house could get a bed here for a few days.

Last year there was a TV show where someone has to learn an activity or a job in one month, and then after one month there is a kind of contest were a jury of professionals has to unmask the "White Raven". That is also the name of the program: De Witte Raaf (the White Raven).

So this location was used to change an ordinary girl into a real painter, and she did well, they could not unmask her.

The Prinsenhof or Hof van Lierde is a magnificent building.

It was built in 1515 - 1520 by the knight Arnold van Lierde.

The Emperor Charles V did sleep here during his visit at Antwerpen in 1520.

Later on it became a Jesuits school and was known as the English Fathers.

Nowadays it belongs to the Antwerp University (UFSIA).

You can walk in freely in order to admire the beautiful courtyard.

When you walk along the Venusstraat, it is not hard to see that this street was one of busiest in the 16th century. Especially with the Stadswaag in the neighbourhood, Stadswaag was a kind of weight house; goods were weight here and also stored.

At Nr 13 in the Venusstraat was a pawnbroker, it was called the Berg van Barmhartigheid (the mountain of Mercifulness). People could pawn their goods here at very low interest rates.

At Nr 10 you find the City Archive.

At the Falconrui nr 53 you find a beautiful building named the Hessen House.

It was built in the 16th century and it was a storage building. That period was very flourishing for Antwerpen.

This Hessen House was used by the German Hansa traders to store their goods and to load and unload their wagons.

Nowadays there is pub/restaurant one side and the other side is frequently used as a museum.

Brouwerhuis (Brewers House), in fact this was the Waterhuis (water house).

The building dates from 1555. This building provided water for the 40 breweries which were located in this neighbourhood.

Till 1930 it even provided water for the people living in this neighbourhood.

The machinery in this building is still intact, it is only a pity that it can not be visited as a single tourist; it is only open for groups and by appointment.

Not one of the best promoted museums but
very interesting. The 'Rockoxhuis' is the renovated
17th century home of Nicolaas Rockox de Jongere
(the younger)(1560-1640). He was a nobel
humanist and an art collector. He also became
    town mayor.

But more important is that he collected art and
he was a Maecenas (he donated money for
    creative people...)

When Rockox died the complete inventory of
his house was done strictly. By those document
it was possible to reconstruct his house.
The museums has some very valuable furniture
and paintings by Rubens , Van Dijck, Jordaens,
    Teniers, Brueghel, Quinten Matsijs, Patinier
    and more less known painters.

He played an important role in the life of Rubens.
Rubens named him ' mijn vriendt ende patroon' -
    My friend and master.

Even the central little garden deserves attention.
A little museums that is not to be missed.

  • The
    The "Vleeshal", or butcher's
    guild house
    by Pavlik_NL
Between the Saint Paul's church and the "Steen" castle, in the old neighborhood of Antwerpen, one can find this strong and tall looking building. It looks like a fortified stronghold and could be a prison, but it has crosses on the towers and so could also be a church. Thanks to VT-member "Belgianchocolate" I know now (again) that it is the "Vleeshal" (meathouse) or the former guildhouse of the Butcher's guild. In is, one can now-a-days visit a strange little museum. Partly it holds a collection of musical instruments and another piece is devoted to miscelanous items that are brought here by sailors from all over the world. Finally, more historical, is the original "pronk-kamer" (show off room) of the Butcher's guild, where this professional group let itself see from the best side.

Antwerp has always been a city with lots of
architecture and building works going on...

On the south side of the leien a new gigantic
building is being raised. Richard Rogers
is the architect of the new Justice court. It 's
architecture is also chosen to become a
tourist attraction and something Antwerp can
    be proud of.

The old court is also a remarcable building
not far from this one (Britselei 55) but it was
too small , too uncomfortable and didn't fit in
the image justice wants to have these days.

Finished in 2005 , as well as the Leien.
(but there is not a single Antwerpenaar that
beliefs this gigantic building will be ready)

June 2004 , the giant 'ass ears' are there.
They are reflecting the sunlight brightly. I took
this picture from the giant wheel from the fair
    nearby.

    major synagogue

Antwerp has got a large Jewish community
and a lot of synagogues in the city.
Most of them are invisible at the outside...

The one in the Bouwmeesterstraat is
a beautiful building. It has two massive
quadratic towers and a large round window
    in the facade.

What is weird is that this synagogue is
outside the area where the jewish
community lives and therefor is only used on
special occasions. It is not that weird if you know
that Antwerp had different communities emigrating
here. The community living in Antwerp nowadays
is completely different from the ones that
    build this remarcable synagoge.
