In the 1980s trees were planted, and an area was created for walking and relaxing. It is, although, forbidden to swim or to do any kind of watersport. One exception though is diving, but for this you need a licence from the city of Antwerp. Read more about diving in my sports tip.
Between 1925 - 1930, the Antwerp harbour expanded and needed a new railway yard near Ekeren. Two pools were digged for raising the floor in the station and the pools were used as a water tank for steam locomotives.
"Recreatiedomein Muisbroek", known by locals as "Put van Ekeren" is an unique piece of splendid nature in the middle of a busy world port. It's a great place for relaxing. The ponds accommodate a large number of domestic fish types and are a restplace for waterfowl and migrating birds.
