    This statue of a shepherd with his sheeps can be found on the right side of the Zimmer tower and refers to the people of Lier being called schapekoppen (sheep heads).

    What's the story behind this name?

    Long ago, there was room for one more cattle market and university. The cities of Lier and Leuven were selected. Lier was offered first choice, and picked the cattle market because at that time a sheep market (wool) was important for the flourishing textile industry. Leuven got the university.

    Unfortunately, the Flemish textile industry lost the battle against foreign competition and died. The university of Leuven, however, has been growing continuously, and is even today a very important university city.

    Because of the bad choice made back then, the people of Lier still carry the nick name "schapekoppen" (sheep heads) today.

    Caves - what makes Lier tasty

    Caves - Beer from Lier
    by Maeve_81
    We already had a brewery in the 14th century and more would follow over the years.
    They only brew 'Cnol', a light beer to replace the polluted water those days.
    In the 18th century, 'Cnol' was replaced by Caves. Although very popular, due to economic circumstances and war, in the middle of the 20th century Caves was no longer brewed.
    Luckely, we decided to restore our tradition!

    Almost everywhere you can taste Caves in Lier, but nothing can compare with a nice pint of Caves from the tap.
    So, go to café St-Gummarus, Felix Timmermansplein (next to the Grote Markt).

    Procession of St Gummarus

  • Lier celebrates St Gummarus the sunday after october 11th (his death).
    Every year you'll see a parade of all the catholic clubs in Lier (archery, hunters, scouts, ...) and the silver shrine of the knee of St Gummarus. It is carried trough the city centre, where the streets are packed with people.
    White sand and coloured paperpieces decorate the ground.

    Absolutely stunning is the big procession of St Gummarus, every 25 year.
    The next one will be in 2015.

  • The old tradition to buy on the market instead of a shop, lives on in Lier :

    * weekly market
    every saturday morning you'll find dozens of market stalls on the Grote Markt, Eikelstraat and Zimmerplein. No need to go to a shop, everything you'll need, you'll find here.

    * fish market
    every thursday morning on the Vismarkt (on the Grote Markt walk toward the St Gummaruskerk, in front of the bridge, turn left). I recommend you to visit the market because of the remarkeble way they sell the fish. They name a high price and then yell rapidly a lower and lower price. Who's first, get's the fish... how longer you wait, the cheaper it gets.

    * pigeon market
    you can visit it every sunday morning. It's a market of international fame, you'll see lots of germans here to sell their pigeons.

    * vegetables & fruit market
    every tuesday and thursday morning, next to the station.

    * flower market
    8 may 2005 from 10 am till 5 pm on the Grote Markt

    * evening market
    once a year on the Grote Markt, I'll tell you when I know more

    * Christmas market
    saturday 11 december : 2 - 10 pm
    sunday 12 december : 2 - 8 pm
    Really beautiful because of the hundreds of lights and christmas trees, lots of food and drink stalls. There's a ferris wheel and saturday you can watch an iglo being build.

    Lierse Vlaaikens
    by tompt
    One of the oldest regional pastries from Belgium is the Lierse Vlaaike
    Around 1722 the Liersche Vlaai is already mentioned. In 1890 there was a tradingfair in Lier because of the Sint Gummarus feast. The King Leopold II and Queen Maria Hendrika were offered a Vlaaike by baker Van den Eynde.
    The queen tried one and said it was delicious. She asked the baker for the recipe. The baker answered it was a secret.
    We know there is clove and sirup in it, but that is it......

    Today the bakers are members of a society to ensure the vlaaikens have a constant quality. So if you are in Lier buy some and enjoy !

    Another speciality of Lier is Caves. A nice beer, good to drink and also makes a great picture.

    See how it is photographed for the page of irisbe.

    Caves is a dark gueze like beer. Its history is very long, and can be traced back to the 14th century. When the last brewery (Cuykens) of Lier closed in 1967, it seemed to be over for the Caves too. But the Gilde de Heren van Lier decided in 1976 to let Caves be brewed again. It is now brewed by brewery Verhaeghe.

    Lierse Vlaaikens are the local sweets and a real tradition. Only bakers in Lier have the recipe and cannot reveal the secret ingredients.

    You can buy them at the bakery.

    When strolling through Lier, you will come across this name more than once. Felix Timmermans was an inhabitant of Lier and a famous Belgian writer whose novels were translated into different languages.

    They look like little cupcakes and they taste superb!
    The recipe is a well-kept secret, the bakers in Lier are bound by a non-disclosure agreement. So, just try!

  • Every year in november, the city of Lier goes crazy !

    During two weeks, the Grote Markt and the Zimmerplein are full of attractions and foodstalls.

    Enjoy a suikerspin (cotton candy), warme rek (nougat), smoutebollen (doughnut balls), ... or a cakewalk, horseriding, fun-fairs, ...

    It's quiet expensive, but you can go on wednesdays, that day prices are reduced.

    When to go?
    from 5 november at 7 pm till 21 november
    on wednesday 17 november the mayor will trow gifts from the balcony of the city hall.
