Beguinage by Helga67 Beguinages were isolated parts of town were only women lived in tiny houses. They also worked and prayed together within this community. They could join or leave as they wished, since there was no obligation of vows like in monasteries. The only vow was chastity within the walls of the beguinage. The need for such communities arose during the time of the crusades when women of class saw their husbands go to war for many years, and often did not see them back. Living in such gated beguinages gave them protection. Leave a Comment Address: Begijnhofstraat, Lier

St. Gummarus church by Helga67 In the middle of town is where the St. Gummarus church is located. But you don't need to look for long because its tower can be seen from far away. It took two hundred years to build this church. Building started in the late 14th century and wasn't finished until 1625. The church is an example of Brabantine High Gothic. Beguinage by Helga67 Not to be missed when visiting Lier is the beguinage. It's a typical example of a street beguinage created in the 13th century. Here you will find about 162 houses in 11 streets. Most houses are made in brick with sandstone. The houses date from the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. Zimmerplein by Helga67 The Zimmer square is a small square, partly car-free, where it is great to have a drink or lunch on one of the many terraces when the sun is out. On this square, you will find the Zimmer tower on one side and the prisoner's gate on the other side. The square used to be docks, and locals still refer to it as the "quay". It's the main nightlife area of the city. Leave a Comment Directions: Between Grote Markt and beguinage

Zimmer Tower by Helga67 The most important and famous tower in Lier is the Zimmer tower. This tower (former name Cornelius tower) was part of the town wall. Over the years, the tower had fallen in a state of disrepair. Early 20th century, the tower was rebuilt and Lier's famous clock builder Louis Zimmer built an astromical clock into the tower. On 29th June 1930, the tower was inaugurated and from now on it was called the Zimmer tower. On the facade, you will notice thirteen dials on the clock. The special thing about this tower is that its entire mechanism is driven by one master clock. The Zimmer tower can be visited in the afternoon. St. Margaret's Church by Helga67 The most important building in the beguinage is for sure the beautiful St. Margaret's church. The church was built in sober baroque style but the bell tower and top of the front show a slight rococo influence. This is because there were one hundred years between the building of the top part of the front and the rest. If you have a chance (when the doors are not closed), go inside to admire the impressive baroque interior. Leave a Comment Address: Beguinhofstraat, Lier

St. Gummarus church by Helga67 Have a better look at the tower of the church. It was supposed to have a pointy roof, but because of lack of money the tower could not be finished. So a small roof was put up just to close it. The locals call the tower the pepper mill now, guess why? Leave a Comment Directions: On top of the Saint Gummarus church

Prisoners' gate by Helga67 The gate was built in the late 14th century and was part of the town wall. Later on, between the second half of the 16th century and 1930 the building was used as a prison, hence the name. On the side of the beguinage, in a niche above the passage stands a statue of Saint Margarita. The red building left of the gate is a beautiful building in eclectic style from 1903. It is a home of rest for the elderly. Leave a Comment Address: Zimmerplein, Lier

St. Gummarus church by Helga67 Go inside and have a closer look at the glass windows. The stained-glass windows are very important. You can see the evolution in the art of of staining glass from the middle of the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century. Take note that the church is closed between noon and 2 p.m. Leave a Comment Address: Kardinaal Mercierplein, Lier
