Zwartzusters convent by Helga67 In an off the beaten street around the corner of the Saint Gummarus church, I stumbled upon this lovely building. It is the Zwartzusters convent. This convent is here since the 16th century and the sisters cared for the ill and aged. The chapel with the four evangelical statues is very striking. Belfry by Helga67 Against the town hall stands the belfry tower. It was built in the 14th century. The tower is crowned with four little corner turrets. These turrets date only from 1911. In that period, it was a fashion to make buildings look old and medieval. Leave a Comment Address: Grote Markt

Spiral staircase in town hall of Lier by Helga67 Go inside and admire the beautiful oak spiral staircase in rococo style sweeping up the first floor without support. Next to the stairs you can see a wrought-iron statue "Fight of the eagle with the dragon". In the hall you can also admire beautiful paintings from the schools of Rubens and Van Dijck. Spui by Helga67 This large solid building, called 'Groot Spui' (big lock sluice) can be found at the Lesser Nete near the former town wall. The Groot Spui had a double function, improving and protecting the mechanism for controlling the level of water of the Lesser Nete. It was built in the 16th century. Saint Jacob's chapel by Helga67 To the right of the town hall you can see the Saint Jacob's chapel. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Jacob the Greater. It was built in the 14th century but has suffered a lot since then. It burnt down completely in the 15th century, was badly treated during the religious riots in the 16th century, was occupied by the Spanish troops in the 17th century and during the French revolution by the French and during the First World War the chapel was badly damaged and rebuilt to what it is now. Houses on market square by Helga67 The houses that you can see when you walk from the Grote Markt towards the river, are typical for the architecture after the First World War. About three-quarter of the buildings were destroyed in 1914. After the war the town council insisted that the picturesque character of the town and the artistic appearance of the houses would be taken into account. This led to the building of houses inspired by historic styles of architecture such as gothic, renaissance and baroque. Leave a Comment Address: Grote Markt

Saint Peter's chapel by Helga67 Next to the Saint Gummarus church, on the other side of the street, you will find Saint Peter's Chapel. This chapel is probably the oldest building still preserved in Lier. It was built in the late 13th century in Roman style. During the first world war the chapel burnt down and was rebuilt around 1920. Leave a Comment Directions: Close to Saint Gummarus church

jubileeclock of Zimmer by tompt The tower in its present form is from around 1930. The tower is named after Louis Zimmer. He was born in a simple family and didn't study. Nevertheless he became an outstanding clockmaker. The Jubilee clock and the Astronomic Studio were way ahead of their time. The miracle clock of Zimmer is the slowest moving mechanical clock in the world. It takes 25800 years for one turn. The tower is actually older, before Zimmer used it for his clock it was called Corneliustower. It is not sure when it was built, but it was part of the 14th century citywall. It was ruined and on the nomination to be torn down in 1930. But when Zimmer gave his Jubilee clock to the city it was tought to be the perfect place to put it. Architect Careels rebuilt the tower. The clock has 13 faces : the official Greenwich Mean Time, the lunar cycle, the signs of the zodiac, the solar cycle, the 7 days of the week, the globe with the meridians, the 12 months, de eternal dates, the seasons, the tidal waves in Lier, the age and the phases of the moon.
