The best way to see Lier is on foot. Lier is really small with many little streets and parts where you cannot easily come by car.
The tourist office has a nice walking tour, that goes along all the major must-sees of Lier. It is called Timmermanspad and is about 5.1 km long.

Lier can easily be reached from different stations in Belgium. See the website below for more info. From Antwerp, it only takes about 15 minutes. The train station is located just outside the town walls. Cross the water at the Antwerpse poort and go straight ahead (Antwerpsestraat) to the Market Square.

In Lier you can make beautifull walks. Like this Timmermanspath. Timmermans is a famous citizen of Lier. He was a writer, but also made paintings. More about him in the general tips.
As the sign shows the walk is just over 5 kilometers long.

There is a regular bus driving from Antwerp (Rooseveltplaats) to Lier (Veemarkt).
It will take you in about 35 minutes from the centre of Antwerp to the centre of Lier.
You can take the bus 296 at the side of the Opera building at the Rooseveltplaats.
There is also a bus connection to and from Mechelen. I don't know the number of the bus, but do check the website of Delijn and you will find out very easy.

One of the easiest way to travel to Lier is using the train. From Antwerp you have direct lines to Lier.
Check the website of the train schedules for this at the national train website
From the train station you can walk through a nice shopping street towards the centre.
It is less than 10 minutes walk.

Lier isn't that big a town, but has plenty of parkingplaces. Therefor this is the best place to go for a few hours, a wonderful walk, a good diner or just ... for historical painted pleasure. The town can be reached from Mechelen, as well as from Antwerpen, by various roads and the main freeway connecting Antwerpen with Brussels. Parking is guided and rather easy. the tarifs are not that high, but bring small change for the machines as they do not take any paper money.

It's quite something else and very relaxing to discover Lier by boat. From behind the Zimmertower (walk along the statue qith the sheeps) little boats are leaving to make a small guided tour over the canals. This way one sees the town from a different angle, which can be a real pleasure.

When we walked up to the Zimmer tower we saw this red train pass by. Didn't take it, but you can probably get more info about it at the touristinfo office.
