Atlas & the burden of the world upon his shoulders

My favorite statue maybe in this park: Atlas bearing the world on his shoulders.

Atlas, the one who dares or suffers. He is the son of the Titan Iapetus and the nymph Clymene and the brother of Prometheus. He is the father of the Hesperides, Maera, the Hyades, Calypso and the Pleiades.
Atlas fought in the war between the Titans and the gods of Mount Olympus. Because of this, Zeus decreeded that, as punishment, he should forever bear the burden of carrying the heavens and the Earth upon his shoulders.
Atlas was turned to stone by Perseus using Medusa's head in the place where the Atlas mountains now stand when he refused to give Perseus shelter. Also known as the king of Atlantis.
Note: Atlas is called a person who supports a great burden.

Jesuit stone of the destroyed Sint Ignatius church

This stone dates from 1735.
It derives from Saint Ignatius church, now known as the Carolus Boromeus church. This church has been hit by lightening in 1718 and severely damaged. If you ever visit the Rubens house you will see in the first room you enter, a painting of how the church must have looked like before the fire destroyed a huge part of the church.

From 1618 till 1773, this park and Venneborg park were property of the Jesuits of Antwerp.
Each time there was a plague, they opened the parks to the public. They believed that the fresh air might keep away the desease.

In 1735 the Jesuits put this stone here to remember that fire and as a protection against the plague and other calamities.
