A nice suprise for me was to discover the Rosegarden. I must admit that I haven't been in this area of the park before and when I was, maybe this garden was closed. It is a very nice colourful place you ought to give a visit.
It is only a few minutes walk at your right side if you have entered the park from the Ruggeveldlaan.
The rose garden of the Rivierenhof has been designed in 1926.
Except for some minor adjusting, the garden has remained unchanged during all those years.
It is rectangle, 0,8 ha big, surrounded by a pergola and bushes of rhododendrons.
The garden is divided in 5 parts: the big rose parts, embedded in the grass, the smaller parts surrounded by buxus bushes, a pergola with wall roses, two borders at the long Northern and Southern side and a heightened border with nice scenting roses.
The garden contains about 8300 rose plants of 300 different varieties.
It represents a nice overview of the different groups that you can find amongst roses.
Diversity is made along their look, their scent and their colours.
Famous cultivators of roses have added to the variety of these flowers.
One of them is without doubt Louis Lens, born in 1924 at Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver).
He is responsible for about 1/3rd of the collection in this garden.
More exactly, he has cultivated about 104 of the 300 different varieties in the Rivierenhof rose garden.
More info about the garden you can find in my travelogues.

Less and less kids know where the milk comes from, what animals are living at a farm and what crops one can grow.
To give them a basic knowledge and keep the city kids in touch with this life, some cities have started up a family farm.
In Rivierenhof you have the Schranshoeve.

When I was a kid I just loved this kind of traffic parks.
The main thing is to educate you the basic trafic rules of course!
First rule is: the street is no playschool...
but then
what if a playschool becomes a street... or traffic park? :)

The personel at Sterckshof were very helpful with providing information.
They even gave me an (older) edition of the catalogue. We were lucky, that day the admittance was free!
And their smile was free too!

When you happen to be in the neighbourhood of Antwerp in the month of June, it is also worth to pay a visit to the Rose garden in 't Rivierenhof.
It is somehow a hidden corner. I didn't know there was one.

Each year Rivierenhof organises "Het feest van de roos" (festival of the rose).
If I am not mistaken it happens in June.
Last year the Silver Museum Sterckshof just opposite of the Parc, participated.
All the silver was decorated with fresh roses.
I was too late to go see it when I saw it on television, but I am now watching out for this year's event!
More info will be provided on their website in Spring!
