The harbor is a land on its own.
It is quit a large area and the fourth harbor in the world.
It is huge!
It is a strange landscape with chimneys ,
cranes , containers , reservoirs...
Some people get impressed and they are of a weird beauty.
If you want to take atmospheric pictures go in the evening..(best in wintertime) ,
when the sun is low and the metal of the factories get a special gleam.
When its dark it even becomes a bit scary...
all those lights , flames on the chimneys , the smell...and the loneliness.
A product of our society.
Amazing how close this is to the cathedral.
Then again , Antwerp would not be Antwerp without the harbor.

'Het kasteeltje van Berendrecht' -' the little castle from Berendrecht' is not know for it's amazing beauty or whatever...
But it is known for something special.
In 1902 the first couple of Blue Heron (ardea cenerea) landed in front of the little castle.
They where the first of what was becoming the largest colony once in Europe.
Now the castle is the setting to admire these animals in a green and peacefull enviroment.
A real lane guides you to a water , some threes...
If you lucky you'll get to see the Galloway bovine that are released here and the colorfull native pheasants.
The blue herons can be seen when they return from their winter holiday in Spain , Africa....
The first birds arrive in Februari in the place that is now called the 'reigersbos' or 'heronforrest'. The castle is renamed 'reigershof' 'heroncastle' because of that.
50 nest...impressive. No?
In februari the forest is also covered with flowers.
On the corner of the 'dreef' there is also a restaurant with a rustic , rural character that looks very decent.
