Stabroek Restaurants

  • 't Koetshuis

't Koetshuis is located on the grounds of the Ravenhof, surrounded by a lovely forest 'Moretusbos'. The building used to be the coach house of the castle, hence the name. They are open from 10 a.m. until late at night. You can just have a drink and/or a little snack on the terrace after your walk in the forest, or you can come at night for a fine...

  • Het Koetshuis

This brasserie-restaurant is beautifully located in the Moretusbos, a forest on the Belgian/Dutch border. Originally the 'Koetshuis' was the coach house of the castle Ravenhof. You're welcome here for a full meal, but also for just a drink or afternoon coffee. The food was very good, and attractively dressed on the plates. Very friendly service.In...

  • La Pipe

Brandnew, IMO not yet fully operational (visited for lunch Nov. 24, 2005).Trendy bar-brasserie, young atmosphere, coldish with nothing (yet) on the walls. Long benches on both sides of the narrow dining room and uncomfy chairs (without back rest) at the really small bistro tables. Colours of the interior are rather dark gray and reddish. Open for...

  • How to get to Ravenhof/Moretusbos?

Coming from Antwerp, follow Highway A12, direction Bergen Op Zoom/Rotterdam (NL), take exit 13 (Stabroek), turn right and follow the main road for approximately 3 kms. You have to pass 2 traffic lights. Turn left into the 'Plantinlaan' and at the end of the Plantinlaan, left again where you will see the castle on your left after a couple of metres.

Stabroek Local Customs

  • Gansrijden (Goose riding)

"Gansrijden" is a folkloric game which still exists in some villages in the north of Antwerp near the Dutch border (Stabroek, Hoevenen, Lillo, Berendrecht, Zandvliet, Ekeren). A dead goose is hung upside down on the gallows. The participants dressed in traditional uniforms (every village has its own colours) ride on a Belgian heavy horse to the...

  • What I think about it?

Although, the castle and forest are off the beaten path, you will not return home thirsty. On the grounds of the castle, there is a tavern "'t Koetshuis" that serves good Antwerp beer on draught ;-)

  • Gloriette

When you walk the lane in front of the Ravenhof, you will come across a lovely little building on a sandy hill. This is the 'Gloriette'. A teahouse, built by the Moretus family in 1768. It is said that they also built a long underground corridor leading from the castle to the teahouse.
