Horse Drawn Carriages by LoriPori If you get tired of walking or just want a nostalgic way of going through the Park, you might want to consider going on a HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE.The carriage is like a covered wagon of old pulled by beautiful and big Belgian Horses. It seemed to be a favourite with the families that were there for the day. Leave a Comment

STREET JESTER by LoriPori As we made our way to the Windmill, we came upon one of many costumed volunteers, the JESTER. I loved his costume as it was so colourful and the children and me of course, were drawn to him. When we entered the Park, we all received "Jester Cards". This was the first opportunity to use them, as the Jester had this box around his neck to play a game. He opens up the box, which has four compartents in it. You place one card in a compartment and then he closes it. You then spin the dial and if your card is the color you spin, He gives you one extra card besides your own card. The idea is to collect more cards as you go along. Of course, I lost my card! Leave a Comment

Stable by LoriPori Saturday, July 30, 2005 After parking the car and paying the entrance fee of 10 Euros per person, we, Hans, Lori, Johan and Wies, headed for the first area HASPENGOUW EN HET MAASLAND.One of the first things we saw was this STABLE, with its beautiful red-tiled roof. To the left of the building, would be where the family lived and to the right are the stables where their animals would be kept. Often one building would serve as both home for the family and their livestock. A little stinky, but practical. Complete farms have been equipped with stables, stalls, barns, farming equipment, etc. BOKRIJK is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Leave a Comment

Typical Thatched Roof House by LoriPori After having a bite to eat and something to drink, we headed for the next area OOST EN WEST VLAANDEREN or East and West Flanders. One of the more interesting buildings was this Typical Thatched Roof House, complete with vegetable garden. These homes had very low ceilings and very tiny rooms. The bedrooms, usually complete with original beds of the time, almost always had the baby's crib right next to the parents Leave a Comment

Well-to-do Family' House by LoriPori The accompanying picture is the House of a Well-to-do Family. Built solidly of red brick, it had nice shutters and good-sized rooms with some very nice furniture and appliances. My next tip will show some of these finer things. Interiors of the buildings, the furniture, household goods, etc. are all authentic. Leave a Comment

Hansie "What did you do now?" by LoriPori Although it looks like Hansie is in Jail, this was actually the CANDLE-MAKERS HOUSE. A Volunteer was inside, showing us how they made honey-comb candles. He had a thin sheet of bee's wax and cut it into two triangles. Then he inserted the long wick from top to bottom and then rolled it with his fingers until it became a cone-shaped candle which he claimed would burn for hours. Leave a Comment

Kerk Erpekom by LoriPori After leaving "Oost en West Vlaanderen" we made our way to the third and last area KEMPEN. When we got to the Church KERK ERPEKOM there was an actual wedding going on inside. Outside, people were milling around waiting to see the bride and groom. As the newlyweds emerged from the Church, the Church Bells rang in honour of the happy occasion. Leave a Comment

Galgenmolen Schulen by LoriPori We then made our way through the tall Sunflowers to one of the two Windmills GALGENMOLEN SCHULEN. It was a wonderful Windmill, situated on top of a little hill. Children were inside the windmill, exploring the inner workings of an authentic, working windmill. Leave a Comment

White Wedding Coach by LoriPori In this photo, you see the White Wedding Coach waiting outside Kerk Erpekom. We were all anxious to see the newlywed couple to emerge from the Church. When they finally came out, there was a round of applause from the onlookers. The Church Bell rang -- the newlyweds looked so happy -- Cool or what!!!!! Leave a Comment

Patio - De Oude Stad by LoriPori After going through the Haspengouw, we were all a bit hungry and thirsty so we headed for the "De Bierkelder" in DE OUDE STAD. The Oude Stad or Old City is a collection of beautiful old Flemish-style buildings housing different little shops such as a tailor shop and a beer cellar "De Bierkelder". In the square in front of the Old City is a patio area which is served by employees of "De Bierkelder". Here we had a light lunch and something to drink as shown in the photograph. ( See also my restaurant tip on "De Bierkelder". Leave a Comment Address: Bokrijk 3600 GenkDirections: DE OUDE STADWebsite: www.bokrijk.be
