Officially, this splendid Open Air Museum lies on the territory of the city of Genk, in the "Park Midden-Limburg" but it is close enough to Hasselt to consider it one of the major attractions in the region around Limburg's capital.

The domain of Bokrijk is some 550 ha large and consist of woods, gardens, farmland and ponds. The large playground is a real treat for children.

Most of all, the Bokrijk Open Air Museum is known for its magnificent collection of old Flemish houses and farms. A large part of the Flemish countryside must have look like this around 1850. You can walk through the entire park and admire the cottages and farms of the different Flemish provinces : East and West Flanders, The Campine region, Brabant, and of course Limburg.Since a few years, also a small old city can be admired, with a caf? in a cellar included.
In some of the houses local people portray the old professions of way back when (farmers, barbers, shoemakers, basketry makers, and so on...). In some of the farms restaurants have been installed, so that the visit can be combined with a good healthy traditional Flemish dish.

The Open Air Museum is open from March 29 till September 30, every day from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. The rest of the provincial domain is open all through the year.

Across the street from the 'Demermanneke' we continue our walk via the Molenpoortplein, left to the Minderbroederstraat and via the passage 'Walputsteeg' back to the point of departure, the city hall.
Have a stop at the Walputsteeg. It's a lovely alley full of drink and eat oppportunities.

A little bit further, still on the Green Boulevard, you'll find the former hospital in neorenaissance style built around mid 1900s. As the city of Hasselt didn't have enough money for the building it took quite some years and with the financial help of the high society before this hospital was ready. Mid 2000s, when medical science developed very quickly, the hospital was no longer adequate and a new Virga Jesse hospital was built.

After arriving at the Zuivelmarkt, go through the gate of the beguinage and have a look inside. It's the youngest of three beguinages in Hasselt, built around 1707. The last beguine that lived here, died in 1886. You will see the remnants of the St Catharina church, which was bombed in 1944. The houses are built around a green inner court.

After leaving the inner ring towards the Havenmarkt, you'll pass this neo-baroque house (left part of building). It used to be a banc and is situated next to what is left of the former Augustinian convent. It was the oldest and biggest convent of the city until the French Revolution with its own baroque church, hospital and latin school.

Back on the Grote Markt (Market Square), we now have a better look at the beautiful statue. This was my favourite.
Officially, it is called 'Listening to the carillon' and symbolizes Hasselt's youth looking at the future but locals call it 'Hendrik and Katrien'. It is said and somewhere written in very old papers that Hendrik and his wife Katrien were the first people who lived on this land, which was called Hendrix-village.

In the 13th century, when the first walls were built around Hasselt, there was not enough water within the city walls. At that time, the Demer, a river close to Hasselt, was derived and brought to the city. Water was important for the industry in the city. The town council needed someone to maintain the river, keep it clean. He was called the 'Demermanneke'.

    Japanese Garden

The Hasselt Garden with its surface area of 25,000 m2 (2.5 ha) is the largest Japanese Garden in Europe. It mirrors the Japanese landscape and was laid out in 1992 with the help of the city of Itami (the Hasselt partner city in Japan), after the model of the 17th century tea gardens. To wander around this garden is to leave yourself open to another culture, to plunge into atmospheric surroundings that are a joy for all the senses. The garden is split into three parts:
    - a transition area between the Western Kapermolen park and the main authentic Japanese Garden,
    - the main garden with ceremonial house, the tea house, water features and exceptional planting
    - a park with 250 Japanese cherry trees.

Since 1682, every seven years Virga Jesse is celebrated in folkloric festivities. The statue of Virga Jesse will be carried through the streets, beautifully decorated for the occasion. During every event, people of Hasselt or organisations donate something to the basilica. In 1982, this glass window was donated .

Still on the Grote Markt, behind the statue of Hendrik and Katrien, you can admire this lovely building. In the facade, you'll notice the number 1659, this was the year when it was remodeled in a typical 17th century half-timbered house. It used to be an Inn.
