A 55km route near the river the Leie ! It will lead you to different and pittoresque places in the surrounding areas of Ghent - another way to travel is by boat !! Enjoy this route anyway - one way or another - even by walking !
Equipment: In winter period - a pair of walking shoes and clothing ! In summer period - leisure !!
It was possible to canoe during the Ghentse festivities on Lys river. If then, I guess it is also possible to do it everyday or was it a move of the moment?
Anyway, check the website I gave in previous tip and you would find more about canoeing in Ghent, canal city.
Equipment: Canoeing on the city should be nice but no sure it was on July 21st with all the crowds. Yet, this guy was smiling so I guess it was fun... for him, at least
Something I did and liked was cycling in Greater Ghent years ago.
I don't remember of the name of the spot we were in. I know it was in Greater Ghent. Quite a countryside with nice alleys and dirty roads (yes!)
We skirted the little river there, with trees along our flat path. That was a nice ride that ended with a hot chocolate in a nearby stamcafý, with people from the village.
Unfortunately, I am not able to give you the name of the spot but it's in the outskirts of Ghent. Plus, I am pretty sure there should be many of this type of scenery in the area. It was sunny, not hot, but surroundings were great, some spring green.
I just remember we went there after visiting a posh residential area. One of my then friends wanted to buy a good-looking villa there so he showed us the "thing". Then, we followed our path to the small villages in the countryside.
Tools in case of accidents (!)
Windbreaker though it is in Spring
Tip applies for biking and walking too.
For infos on cheaper sport facilities, check below website.
I think the most popular recreation area in the western part of Gent.A lot of facilities like :
- Fishing and several beach activities
Builded in the 80ths with artificial skiing mountains - even he lake is artificial - but as you know - people from Gent are very inventive.
There is also enough space for camping
"Nationale Watersportbaan George Nachez"
located at the western border of Gent in the district of Blaarmeersen has a certain national-even international reputation.
Ghent is trying to mark this Blaarmeersen area as part of the "Tour the France" edition 2007
We will see - Deinze (near Ghent) is interested too.
If so - i will be on the spot to see the "Tour of Flanders" in April, and than the "Tour de France" in July. I think than i will buy a cycle myself (for recreation)
Equipment: The channel has a lenght of 2300m, 76 m width and is 2m diep.
It was builded in 1955 at the occasion of the european games.
Blaarmeersen became a recreation park with a lot of facilities
Another beautiful cycling tour in Flanders
Not that far from Gent south and more precise between Oudenaarde and Zottegem
Cycling around in this area is exciting during weekends.Windmills - green areas and of course - never to forget some small local pubs with traditioal local beers like ENAME and many others - others - others !!
Equipment: A good cycle and some smaal change to pay your debts in the pubs - because they accept no credit cards.
Cycling is without doubt (next to soccer) the most popular sport in Belgium. I had the occasion to visit several disciplines of cycling. The "Tour the France" in Ghent
- the "Cycle cross championship" in Hooglede, the unique "Tour de Flanders" and not at least the "6 days cycling festival" in Ghent.
At the six days (20-25/11/2007), most rememberal moment was the derny final, a final between "Genteneir" Iljo Keisse and Bruno Risi (Switserland). Bruno was first.
Equipment: As a non active cycler, just my camera
Must be a great experience, canoeing on the river "Leie" and or "Lieve". From the center of the port to the sluice gate "Rabot"
From the Meat Halls and previous Fishmarket up to maybe ...."Bruges" You never can tell
because the river " Lieve" floats direction belgian coast. I have to tell a few VT members that transportation around Ghent is possible ..this way.
There are a number of things you can here:
- canoeing: there's an official club
- running: there's a special track around the water
- tennis, both inside and outside
Something for everyone! Please note that you have to pay for some of these activities...
Equipment: Phew, that would be:
Ghent is the sports capital of Flanders, with the best sportsinfrastructure in the country. Especially the site around Blaarmeersen is very important for people who like sports in general. There is the "Topsporthal Vlaanderen" for indoor activity's like gymnastics and indoor soccer. With a sporthotel next door (only for athletes). There is a canal with rowing facilities called "watersportbaan". There is a (artificial) lake with a beach and surfing facilities and inside the park around the lake there is room for basketbal, football, rugby, tennis, a velodrome and offcourse jogging... and much more.
