Favorite thing: Er was eens een heuvel met koppen
wie gaat er daar niet naar de knoppen
Die puist is zo lastig en steil
je komt er boven als een dweil
heeft er moeten stoppen
Freely translated :
Once there was a hill
who does not break on it
This spot so difficult and steep
you reach the top as floor-cloth
needed to stop here
- Historical Travel
Favorite thing: Every cyclist supporter can remember these tragic images. It was in the Tour de Flanders of 1978. The Danish cyclist Jesper Skibby was on the run together with Ludo Schurgers, when halfway the climb of the Koppenberg, Skibby did fall down and that way he blocked the road for the following car. In that car were international cycling director, and because the rest of the group of cyclists was following nearby, he decided to drive on, and like this he drove over the bike of Jesper Skibby. Result a broken bike. The public was furious, they did throw all kind of objects to the cyclist director, and in no time he was inside the vehicle.
And because of this incident, they cancelled this hill out of the Tour de Flanders for many years.
Favorite thing: About two years ago they decided to restore this cobbled road. The old road was in such a bad condition, that it was really dangerous.
With the restoration, the Flemish government secured an old tradition of road building for the future. Like this the Koppenberg is protected as an natural and archeological monument.
This restoration has costed about 250.000 Euro.
- Road Trip
Favorite thing: Before you have reached the top, you should stop and turn around to admire the splendid view.
At the top you are surrounded by houses, and like this it is impossible to see the great scenery.
Fondest memory: The view

Koppenberg in numbers
Favorite thing: For the cyclist among you here some numbers:
Length : 600 m
Height : 75 m
Average rising percentage : 10.8 %
Highest rising percentage : 22 %
Height difference : 65 m
Length of cobbled road : 428 m
Everyone who has ever climbed a hill by bike, knows that this is very difficult.
Even the biggest cyclist of the world like Merckx, Hinault, Moser, Saronni, Lemond and Fignon needed to put their feet on the ground. So if you do not reach the top without putting foot on the ground do not feel ashamed.
- Road Trip
Favorite thing: Be careful when you want to climb the Koppenberg by car. As on many occasions cyclists are trying to climb this hill too, and they do not climb very fast, mostly they can not climb in a straight line, so the most of them are zigzagging.
So it is matters of respect for their sportive attempt, so put your car to the side and let those cyclists pas, and wait till they have reached the top.
Lots of signs
Favorite thing: The Koppenberg is easy to be found. When you are driving along the big road, coming from Kaster / Berchem in the direction of Oudenaarde, in the small village of Melden, you turn right, and from there on you can easily follow the Koppenberg signs.
Fondest memory: The satisfaction when you have reached the top.
