Cafe d'Oase on the Oude Markt by Christophe_Ons Lined front to back with cafes, the Oude Markt square (Old Marketplace) is the main nightlife scene in Leuven. There's a great variety to choose from - from the tiny, cozy and laidback cafes to the bigger places that sometimes have an improvised dancefloor and loud music. What most of these places have in common, though, is that they attract a young crowd, including many students - both Belgians and international students from a.o. the US, Ireland, Spain, and so on. Most places have a number of beers on draft, and a large variety of bottled beers to choose from, but you can also get alcohol free drinks as well. Most places also have a liquor license. Here in Belgium, the age at which you can drink unaccompanied by someone who is 18 or older, is 16. by chicabonita The Oude Markt is a really great place surrounded by many pubs and bars all with a terrace for sitting out side. My favourite was not a pub but the bench "Kotmadam" on which we were sitting quite some time. We bought the drinks in one of the pubs beside it and had a great time talking to a group of guys from Amsterdam ... Leave a Comment

Oude Markt by Helga67 This is the square where everything happens at night. Here you will find one cafe next to the other where students come together at night. The square is also called "'The greatest bar of Belgium'". During the month of August the famous "Marktrock" festival takes place here.

by chicabonita I don't know the name of the pub but my friends boyfriend (he's from Leuven) told us that it's the best place to have a mojito. It is also a restaurant. A very nice place!!! The place is at the Oude Markt besides a pub/dancing cellar called Bierkeller (if I remember the name correctly) By the way, the mojito was great :-)) Leave a Comment

Moonlighting by Norali It was not even the end of the afternoon when we reached the beguinage, worrying about seeing it only in the dark. Hopefully, we could see the medieval area, in daylight and also in twilight. We visited the area, soaked up the ambience. It seemed to me that the area wouldn't stand any noise, it was serene and silent anyway. Perfect to have some students' nightlife: studying and in some periods, moonlighting. Hehe.. This picture was taken while we were taking a picture of Suri posing on bikes parked in front of students' kots. He was posing on the bikes, for BM's pleasure when I spotted this light a student switched on. She was bent on her desk, reading, writing... studying! Yep... this is an usual nightlife type over here. With some coffee poured, sometimes a light music as a surround sound... In January-February and May-June (blocus period), coffee can be replaced by some guarana drinks, vitamin complex pills. As for eating, spaghetti bolognese and other pasta sauce if the students decided to keep their kots. In case they decided to return home and devote their time to only studying, eating, sleeping and some TV-break, they would be pampered by Mum.. very probably without bolo spaghetti, students' food par excellence.:) One of usual nightlife that doesn't go along with beer-drinking :)

Oude markt by Norali In Leuven, university city with a past, one should expect some nice nightlife.. Probably not disco-type neither the hype lounge joints but rather laid-back. Oude Markt is, as far as I could see, one of places to be. The square is edged by pubs and cafés, nothing else. It's nicknamed "the biggest pub in the world"... Of course, beer, other drinks, music, sometimes live music. We landed in a pub that has either been lately renovated/ either brand newly launched. Some nice music (Tori Amos live CD and rock classics live too), young clientèle, less smoky than elsewhere. Oh, in fact, we initially tried a pub and couldn't stay due to too much cigarette in there, then switched to land to a less smokey one.. forgot the name. We are on Oude markt... jump in here, step down, land there... You would be spoilt with choice. Fun enough, the one where we hanged out had'nt installed its toilets yet... Clients were told to go to the neigbouring café (agreement between them) so did some of us. Meanwhile, we had some time talking.. first the four of us chatted together then the Flemish-speaking (Gini, Dannie) on one hand and the English-speaking on the other hand (Suri, me). Nothing bad in that.. Interesting ! I discovered there too that this Indian guy turned into a Duvel- guy?.. haha.. A Biermadam effect on our Suri? I had a coke but regretted I didn't have my Duvel... Too late!
No tie, G-string allowed, preferrably out of the jeans waist... :)), Laid-back.. casual.. place seems to be designed for students. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Oude markt

This remark came from a local I talked to. The nightlife is completely dominated by students. All bars are of the crowded and noisy type, and the students are noisy themselves too. Sorry, I cannot judge or myself, but you decide if you like this sort of nightlife or not. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
