Mechelsestraat, view from the "Vismarkt" by Christophe_Ons No motorvehicels are allowed in the first part (closest to the center) of this lovely street. It will lead you to the "Vismarkt" (Fish Market, although that is no longer the case). Although it's mainly lined with stores, the Mechelsestraat is a nice place to take a walk. Start behind St. Peter's church, at the small statue of Erasmus. There are a few clothing and shoe stores, some of the boutique variety, but they're nice. There's also a well known comic book store, "Gobelijn Strips". Note : the 16th century cartographer Mercator (1512-1594, renowned for his Atlas and earth/celestial globe) used to live on Mechelsestraat. Leave a Comment

St. Jacob's Church in Leuven by Christophe_Ons From the original Romanesque church which dates from the beginning of the 13th century, only the tower remains. The transept was constructed between 1457 and 1488 by the master builder of the Leuven town hall, Matheus de Layens. Sadly, St. Jacob's has been closed to the public for several decades. Renovation is slowly progressing. Address : Sint Jacobsplein (St. Jacob's Square) Directions : facing the townhall, walk to the right, down the "Brusselsestraat". After ca. 100m you cross the Dyle river, continue along the Brusselsestraat past the hospital building, at the intersection with the "Kapucijnenvoer". Continue along the "Brusselsestraat" ca. 100m further, the church is now on your left. Total distance from town hall : ca 1 km (0.7 mile) (note : the botanical garden - see next tip - is nearby : from Brusselsetraat, walk down Capucijnenvoer - the garden is ca. 150m further, to your right) Leave a Comment

Lakenhal, view from Naamsestraat toward the center by Christophe_Ons In the starting period of the university, the city of Leuven put the Lakenhal at disposal, built in 1317 and where upto then clothweavers sold their merchandise. Soon it became too small for lectures. Today it is the place of residence of the management of the university. In the sixteenth century, the university knew its first flourishing and it enjoyed great fame because of the presence of great scholars such as Adriaan of Utrecht - Pope Adrianus VI -, Erasmus, Vives and Mercator. The presence of researchers of worldstature, is a tradition that still stands today. Directions : from the center, walk up Naamsestraat (the street to the right side of the town hall), the Lakenhal is on your right. Leave a Comment

Justus Lipsius overlooking the town by Christophe_Ons A philologian and humanist of the Netherlands, b. at Overyssche, 18 Oct., 1547; d. at Louvain, 23 March, 1606. Descended from an illustrious family, he studied law and literature at Louvain and later lectured there. Apart from the philological works, he composed treatises on politics and ethics; of these the treatise on constancy (De Constantia, Antwerp, 1584) is the best known, and has had thirty-two editions without including the translations. He was appointed professor of history and Latin at the Collegiurn Trilingue of Louvain (1592), then historiographer to the King of Spain (1595), and later honorary member of the State Council (1605). Some of Lipsius's most important works were on Seneca and Stoicism. He wished to explain in detail the Stoic philosophy, for which he professed the greatest admiration, objecting only to its toleration of suicide. He has time only for a general outline of the system and of its place in ancient philosophy ("Manuductionis ad stoicam philosophiam libri III", 1604), and an analysis of the theology, the physics, and the cosmology of the Stoics ("Physiologiae stoicorum libri III", 1604); he had not time to write the ethics. Nevertheless these two works are even to-day the most complete treatise ever written on Stoicism as a whole. His last work was a description and history of Louvain (1605). (the Statue is halfway Bondgenotenlaan, on your left side as you walk from the station to the center) Leave a Comment

Le Semeur by Norali I was surprised seeing those sculpture artworks in the entrance hall of the City hall. Usually, such works mean to be kept in a museum in some glassbox. Here, I saw some intersting pieces, namely this one from Constantin Meunier. Hihi.. silly me. I was a kid when I could admire "Le semeur" for the first time. Was it Van Gogh? I guess, yes! Anyways, this painting of the sower was engrammed in my head. The position of the sower, leaning a bit, that gives a dynamic shape to his silhouette, the seeds suspended in the air (I think, yes!)... all of that made me think of life, everyday life in countryside. oh! I couldn't forget it. Without knowing that Constantin Meunier made his own "Semeur", I had a surprise seeing this piece there. Now, I remember I saw another Meunier's Semeur in the garden if Mariemont museum too or was it a replica? Oh well! For sure, I should visit entrance halls of city halls more often. Leave a Comment

Alsace in Leuven? by Norali Hmm.. I couldn't resist. We were walking in the Begijnhog (Beguinage) and joking around when we saw this facade. Not the most beautiful of the buildings but, as far as I know, one of the most particular ones. The features reminded me of Alsace though the surounding buildings didn't have this stylme at all. They didn't have the timbers plastering the walls. But, this building had. Now, I may be wrong and maybe Belgium has this particular feature too. I've never seen such a style here. Leave a Comment

My wedding ceremony (gini) by Norali Strange, I didn't have any feeling on my own wedding ceremony. I wonder why.. hehe... I didn't feel anything but at some extent, it made me think. What would it be to get married -for real, that is- and not feel anything? Not happy, not excited, not feeling concerned... That should be horrible. Oooh! at least, this brilliant idea of Gini made us laugh. It was fun. I have some idea about a wedding ceremony, about marriage in itself... about commitment, about the marriage institution. That should be terrible, not feeling anything that special day. Crazy enough, a false and staged ceremony made me tickle. Ooh! Leave a Comment

Castle Of Horst On A Rainy Day by steventilly The castle of Horst at Sint-Pieters-Rode is a pleasant destination. To just see the castle will only take you an hour or less, but it's worth seeing. If the weather is nice you can stay longer and take a walk in the nearby coutryside. It was too wet for that when we visited. Combine it with a trip to Hoegaarden to really make a great day out. See my Hoegaarden and Sint-Pieters-Rode pages for more information.
