  • Pur Pur: coffee - juice - wine

    by Maeve_81 Written Aug 24, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Their accent lies on coffee, juice and wine : and that was a good choice.

What I like about this place is that everything is fresh and prepared with care (you can taste it!). The interior is very nice... modern but not cold... but the bathroom is just weird... be prepared for some orange light...

Opened from 8 am till 1 am, every day except on monday and tuesday.

Favorite Dish: The menu changes constantly, so no suggestions on the food... but do try the 'Tropical delight' fruitjuice... it was excellent!

De Blauwe Maan: A place to go

by kbl Updated Aug 23, 2004

The restaurant is located in the heart of Leuven. Johan and its wife made it a more then enjoyable evening, even as it was our first time here.

    Blauwe Maan = Blue Moon

Favorite Dish: The menu allows you to give the Chef control over your lunch, based on what he bought that day on the market. DO!

Trendy restaurant with excellent food and wine. Very nice interior, food is served in a mouthwatering way, great terrace. Only pity is that they don't accept credit card in the weekend.

Favorite Dish: All dishes are winners, and the best is, you can choose to have every dish as either a starter or a main course!

???: Wholegrain bread was it .. but watch out the bill

by Norali Updated Apr 20, 2004
Dannie, Suri ready to bite! (Suri)

From Leuven being a University city, you can expect cheap eateries there...

On our visit, we found a snack where to grab a bite... Large choice of sandwiches.. we four chose the wholegrain baguette.. Bread was good.

Everyhting went OK.. except in the bill. It was not that clear but displayed price didn't include VAT. Then, we paid but hadn't understood that much the calculations either.

Rather than accusing the snack of some frauding (not sure of that anyway), I would advise to pay attention to the VAT- thing... Well, seems that none of us, Belgium-based, were used to that tariff system. Usually, we pay the price on the menu card and in that case, VAT is included... But here, it was not.

Anyway, i don't even remember of the name of the snack. I think it was located in same street as Fier Margritte laid statue.

    Favorite Dish: whole grain sandwich

Aglio e Rosmarino: Authentic delicious Italian restaurant for foodies

by Jozzzef Updated Mar 15, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This small and cosy restaurant is family operated. The food is authentic italian: Luxury trough simplicity. With just a hanfull of ingredients they create wonderfull dishes without any fuss like you and I would bake an egg. Best of all, it is really rather cheap! your can have "tortelinni a la marina" for 7,5 euros. This is how I imagine food tastes at Harry's bar in Venice... (I hope to go there sometime.)

Favorite Dish: As starter we usually take 'antipasto misto', you can take the large portion and eat it with two (they are used to that). You get a big plate with a salad in the middle and prosciutto, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, fish,... (The first time we thought they brought two small portions because it was so much!). The raviolli with wild mushrooms and truffle oil is my favorite (less then 10 euros). My girlfriend's favorite is Pizza with scampi and bacon.

De Werf: Cosy bar/restaurant that will cheer you up

by Jozzzef Updated Mar 12, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place is always full with funny decorations. They serve great comfort food: chicken wings, pasta (belgian style), salads... The portions are huge. Whether you go here because it is raining or to enjoy the sun on the terrace, it will always put a smile on your face.
The only negative thing is that they hire (cheap) inexperienced personnel (mostly students) and they seem to always mess up your order, so make sure you explain it clearly

Favorite Dish: It is not the finest new cuisine but confort food! We like the salad with lettuce, grapes, pieces of orange, feta cheese, baked pieces of apple, bacon, vinaigrette. We now recreate this at home too :-)

Try this small restaurant famous for the wide choice of wines which you can even order by the glass.
Lounge interior with same style of music at the background.
Do not forget to reserve in advance ! Only limited seats available !

Favorite Dish: Can not recommend a specific dish, try them all because the menu changes on a regular basis and there are always suggestions of the day if you can not make your choice from the menu.

kokoon: Smaak op een bedje van stijl

by chicabonita Updated Oct 5, 2003

In a small street near the market place one of the many restaurants in this area. Services was good and friendly.

Favorite Dish: I chosed the only vegetarian dish of the menu - tofu with diffrent vegetables, mmmmmhhhh - very tasty! My friend Susanne and her boyfriend chosed salm which was also good. Again we went for the house wine which was a good red wine from South Africa. The coffee was served with some little pieces of chocolate (unfortunately not the good Belgium one) and small pices of cake.

Just had a look on their webside and on their menu which seems to change regularly.

Wok On Air: Excellent chinese/japanese restaurant

by Jozzzef Updated Sep 5, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is one of my favourite restaurants! It has a bright white modern interieur. You can have a table but i recomment sitting at the bar. You can see the chef selecting the fresh ingredients and stir fry them on a flaming stove. You can either select your own ingredients or take a normal dish, but both are excellent options! The entrees and soups are also fabulous, I don't really like sushi so I haven't tried those. The monthly special has always been great (i think i had them all :-))

Favorite Dish: The 'chinese breads' are my favourite entree and my personal recepy is beef with black bean saus and roasted onions over noodles. Yummie!

A nice bar with a modern interieur where you can have a selection of tapas. They also have some other dishes like spaghetti and so on. Not haute cuisine but a nice bar with good food on a great location!

Favorite Dish: When we go there we usually take calamaris, chicken wings, patatas bravas, meatballs and don't miss the tomato toasts!

    Chess Cafe

    Chess Cafe

In a 32-m high former silo building just outside the center of Leuven, you can eat different wok meals as much as you like for only 18 euro.
    How does it work?
You go to a refreshment bar, choose your ingredients, give them to a cook in the back of the restaurant, tell him which sauce you want (there is a whole list of normal - medium and hot sauces) and he will prepare it for you in a wok. It's just delicious.

Favorite Dish: Start with a cocktail "Caïpirinha". It's very refreshing.
If you like your food very hot, try the Korean sauce.

    Chess Café: Chess Café

    by myriam_c Written Aug 25, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Good souls who prepare your food ...

The Chess Café is a very trendy place, in an industrial style building. It's a "wok away" restaurant where you make your choice of meat, fish, veggies, ... at a buffet. You put everything on a plate and bring it to the wokking counter where you select the sauce you would like to have with it (sweet & sour, curry, hot & spicey - up to you). After a few minutes you get your plate back, stir fried and ready to eat.

Favorite Dish: Their "eat as much as you can" formula costs 18 euro and you can refill your plate as manyy times as you like.
Of course you can have an appetizer first and a dessert, if you wish.
Try the caipirinha (house aperitif) which is very good!

    Het Via Via reiscafé

    by a005116 Written Jun 12, 2003

The 'Via Via' is a meeting place for both travelers and locals. This café was one of the first of the now international network of these Flemish Via Via cafés (Kathmandu , Leon, Zanzibar, Leuven, Yogyakarta, Dakar, Antwerpen, Cataluña, Copan, Arusha). In most of them you can also find accomodation but unfortunately not in this one. Activities are organised all the time to share the expierences some travelers may have had in far worlds. from time to time the're also trips organised....

    Pasta

The Mama Mia is a smaller, but delicious cheap and cozy italian restaurant in the 'Parkstraat'. Very popular with students, so it might be full when you arive late.
The Pizza's are better than anywhere, even than those in Italy!
