    My favourite place

    by Polly74 Written Feb 10, 2005

Old Market Square is my favourite place in Leuven.
I really like sitting at bar or restaurant terraces during spring or summer time drinking a bear or having a meal with friends and look around.
You never get bored there! And that's why it is called 'The greatest bar of Western Europe'

De Blauwe Maan: A place to go

by kbl Updated Aug 23, 2004

The restaurant is located in the heart of Leuven. Johan and its wife made it a more then enjoyable evening, even as it was our first time here.

    Blauwe Maan = Blue Moon

Favorite Dish: The menu allows you to give the Chef control over your lunch, based on what he bought that day on the market. DO!

???: Wholegrain bread was it .. but watch out the bill

by Norali Updated Apr 20, 2004
Dannie, Suri ready to bite! (Suri)

From Leuven being a University city, you can expect cheap eateries there...

On our visit, we found a snack where to grab a bite... Large choice of sandwiches.. we four chose the wholegrain baguette.. Bread was good.

Everyhting went OK.. except in the bill. It was not that clear but displayed price didn't include VAT. Then, we paid but hadn't understood that much the calculations either.

Rather than accusing the snack of some frauding (not sure of that anyway), I would advise to pay attention to the VAT- thing... Well, seems that none of us, Belgium-based, were used to that tariff system. Usually, we pay the price on the menu card and in that case, VAT is included... But here, it was not.

Anyway, i don't even remember of the name of the snack. I think it was located in same street as Fier Margritte laid statue.

    Favorite Dish: whole grain sandwich

De clijne tafel: Simple decent food, Belgian style!

by Jozzzef Updated Apr 4, 2011

A large piece of meat, lots of sauce, lots of french fries, a small salad and some mayonaise, that is how belgians like their food. Unlike the french or italian we believe in large portions. In that respect, this is a typical belgian restaurant. Don't confuse this with "streekgerechten" = typical regional foods, which are usually simple hearty dishes grand-mother style. A plus is that they have your food ready in no time, so quick it is a bit suspicious somtimes... The place is popular so it might be a good idea to reserve a table if you want to be on the safe side. Not haute cuisine but very decent for it's kind, 'satisfied' is 'le mot just'.

Favorite Dish: Cordon blue with cream-mushroom saus and french fries (small salad is included). Koninginnenhapje (meat +chicken), stoofvlees (meatstew) and steaks are popular dishes in belgium.

    de wiering: very characteristic

by Heidje Written Aug 30, 2002

this is a very old building that was renovated without loosing its character. It's one of the most beautifull places if you want to know how 'old' leuven must have been. It's full of wood (stairs, floors,...) and you have the river Dijle flowing next to you.
The food is excellent here and keep room for dessert! (try the ribs)

Favorite Dish: they have a big dessertplate here. on that plate yoiu find little pieces of any kind of dessert you can imagine. I never take this on my own because it's just too much.

    Het Via Via reiscafé

    by a005116 Written Jun 12, 2003

The 'Via Via' is a meeting place for both travelers and locals. This café was one of the first of the now international network of these Flemish Via Via cafés (Kathmandu , Leon, Zanzibar, Leuven, Yogyakarta, Dakar, Antwerpen, Cataluña, Copan, Arusha). In most of them you can also find accomodation but unfortunately not in this one. Activities are organised all the time to share the expierences some travelers may have had in far worlds. from time to time the're also trips organised....

Although Belgium is not particularly famous for its cheeses, the offer is huge, both in quality and origin.
